The most important moment of the Ted Cruz filibuster...

If anyone is confused about what is going on with this whole Ted Cruz theatre - and such great theatre it is - I give it 10 of 10 stars. Years from now people are going to look back at Ted Cruz and remember him as a great communicator, and I don't say those words lightly. Not every politician truly understands communication on a symbolic level, but I can tell you this: Ted Cruz does. There wasn't a thing he did last night that wasn't carefully considered with the symbolic nature of communication in mind. From the Green Eggs and Ham, to the DUck Dynasty - this guy was hitting line drives of communication straight into the conservative heart of America, and its connecting.

But there was one moment among all the theatre that cut right to the heart of this bit of showmanship, and got down to brass tax. What is this all about? It's about one thing: winning the Senate in 2014 and repealing Obamacare. Here is him telling the country how he intends to do it:

You're hilarious. I saw your posts GUSHING about Obama from a few years ago. Even I was embarrassed. People like you are the reason people starting mocking Obama as "Messiah" and such--the bizarre teenage girl-like enthusiasm. Now, like a teenage girl, you've moved onto a new crush. I have a feeling if I searched I'd find your love notes to George W and Al Gore. Careful with your new infatuation--teenage girls usually have their hearts broken.

At the time, Obama was the only candidate with an anti-war message, which was, and actually still is, my number one issue. I'm not ashamed of that. I, of course, realized quickly that he was all talk and no substance, not to mention learned more about his positions.

I don't even know if I'd vote for Ted Cruz for president right now. He's got a long way to go to win my vote, but that doesn't mean I can't admire the job he's doing in a fight that I think is worthwhile, and have been a part of since 2007 when I first started donating to the Ron Paul campaign.

Right now, my vote is resting with Gary Johnson. It will depend on what happens in the primaries whether I think I can trust a Republican with it.

So part II...

In the last post I talked about what a great communicator Ted Cruz is. Like I said, every thing he did, he did pointed at intended audiences. I personally wasn't aware that he was all that skilled in communication - I mean, I knew he was well spoken, every senator is. But I didn't realize that he's playing the game at another level until I listened to this interview, which he gave with Rush Limbaugh after the filibuster.

So as we all know, during the filibuster, Cruz read a lot of material from a lot of sources. What I didn't know, was that in the 20 hours, he managed to slip something in there written by Rush Limbaugh's own father.

Now, I'm no fan of Rush Limbaugh. As far as I'm concerned, the guy has been part of the problem for two decades now, however, he's facing market pressures of his own, and as Milton said "the way you solve things is by making it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing."

In any case, the ploy was brilliant. Rush was practically gushing over Cruz on the EIB microphone. Whatever anyone wants to say about Rush, that microphone has power - he knows it, Cruz knows it, and pretty well everyone on the left knows it.

One person who knows it, is Mitch McConnell... Wonder what he thinks when he hears this discussion...

I'm not sure what the point of voting against the next procedural step would be. It's just a vote on allowing amendments - what would Cruz gain by being against amending the house bill? I'm sure his own side have amendments they'd like to add to this thing before they hit it back over the net.

One problem with your 'great communicator' proclamation--he has an annoying nasally voice and comes across as a whiny bitch. Shouldn't matter, but it does.

I think there is some confusion out there about which cloture vote is important. Most of the pundit class doesn't understand this like they should and are making fools of themsleves because of it.

This one that happened today was not important to oppose. Not matter what, the Senate isn't going to accept a house bill without amendments. Everyone knows that, including Cruz. There's nothing to gain by voting against this procedural step, which is simply to call up the bill for debate. Why would Cruz be against that?

The cloture vote today passed at 100%. What happens next is that Harry Reid will get first crack at the floor - he'll wipe out the house bill and replace it with his own, and THEN file cloture. THIS is the cloture vote that matters.

Here's Cruz's own words on the subject:
"The central vote the Senate will take on this fight will not occur today and it will not occur tomorrow. The first vote we are going to take on this is a vote on what is called cloture on the motion to proceed. Very few people not on this floor have any idea what that means and even, I suspect, a fair number of people on this floor are not quite sure what that means. That will simply be a vote whether to take up this bill and to begin debating this bill. I expect that vote to pass overwhelmingly, if not unanimously. Everyone agrees we ought to take this up, we ought to start this conversation.

The next vote we take will occur on Friday or Saturday and it will be on what is called cloture on the bill. That is the vote that matters. Cloture on the bill, the vote Friday or Saturday, is the vote that matters.

Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/gover...#ixzz2fyHbTLBB
So look at your calendar. Today is the 25th. The government shut down is October 1st. Cloture was filed today, so there is a 30 hour clock right now allowing debate on this bill (every bill is given at least 30 hours of opportunity for debate as part of the legislative rules around cloture). This also gives the people a chance to contact their senators and let them know what they think.

Friday is when the rubber meets the road in the Republican party, and those dudes are sweating bullets right now because Reid needs 60 votes for cloture, and there are 20 Democrat and 15 Republican seats in play for 2014.

Reid will get his cloture vote, but the score card for 2014 for the Republicans races will be set based on how this vote goes. Any of those 15 Republicans who vote in favor of cloture are basically voting in favor of being primaried - and many of the Democrats will be voting in favor of an expensive primary race.

So sometime Friday, Reid will pull his maneuver, and another cloture vote will happen, and once that vote passes (which everyone expects it will, including Cruz), Senate rules kick in and the floor will be open to debate Reid's new bill for 30 hours. Which means that it won't be until sometime late Saturday night or Sunday morning that they can vote on the final bill itself.

Sunday, the 29th.

...and it's not even done then because then the bill goes back to the House. I have no idea what is going to happen once it gets to that point.

I disagree with that. He's very well spoken, and doesn't rile easily. Everything he says, even to the opposition, is done in an even, matter of fact tone. And the symbolism he uses in his language is stuff that runs powerful with the people he's trying to connect with.

I'm one of the rare individuals who got a communications degree because I have a genuine enthusiasm for the craft of communication. I'm a geek about it, and the political stage is like the NFL of communication. I am ok with being a geek on it, and welcome the criticism that goes along with my geekdom.

Crazy talk.

I agree with your earlier characterizations of the event as far as the intent and context but the long term effect? This is really dramatic.

I underestimated the guy at first, so I can't begrudge anyone to doubt him now. But this guy has got a level of polish that you don't see very often in conservative candidates - or really candidates in general.

He smokes Obama there. Cruz can easily talk off the cuff without needing a teleprompter, and do so without fumbling his words the way Obama does.

As far as tactics go, I don't know a single person who think Obama care is going to be a good thing for them economically. It's all about the money, and polls show that the American people are with Ted Cruz on this. Does that mean they're willing to blow the thing up and start all over again. Who knows? I know I am. I guess that's what this is all about, and I get the sense that not too many people are calling into their senators begging them to hold the line on Obamacare.
