ObamaCare goodness continues

Home Depot Inc. (HD), the world’s largest home improvement retailer, plans to end medical coverage for about 20,000 part-time employees and direct them to government-sponsored exchanges scheduled to open next month as companies revamp benefits to fit the U.S. Affordable Care Act.

Employees with fewer than 30 hours a week will no longer be offered limited liability medical coverage, Stephen Holmes, a spokesman, said today by telephone. About 5 percent of Atlanta-based Home Depot’s 340,000 employees are enrolled in that plan.

So Home Depot offered a limited insurance plan that was available to part-timers who wanted to pay the premium to get it. Now, those part timers can get better coverage cheaper through the exchanges. This really sucks.

Question now is....how many employees at Home Depot that are at 40 hours a week currently will be cut to 30? Instead of having 5 works at 40 hours a week that have to be covered...will Home Depot move to 5 employees at 30 hours a week. These mandates have consequences, and companies are going to adjust accordingly to protect their bottom line.

If Home Depot was already offering the 40-hour workers insurance coverage prior to the mandate, then why does the mandate even impact them?

Seems like the "cut the 40-hr worker to 30 hrs" strategy only works if you weren't offering the 40-hr worker insurance in the first place.

If you don't think the mandate impacts every single person with health insurance and the companies they work for, you are incredibly naive.

You didn't address my question or my comment. Home Depot, for example, didn't have to have an insurance plan for full-timers before, but they did. Why would a mandate to have what they were already providing cause them to change anything?

I'm open to learning something here, but you can't just tell me "You're being naïve."

I don't understand why everyone is so attached to healthcare being completely tied to your employer.

It doesn't help the employee and it doesn't help the employer.

When you are getting your coverage through someone else, like an employer, you are at their mercy regarding "keeping your plan." That was always the case, regardless of Obamacare.

These are limited coverage plans being offered to the part-timers. The plans through the exchanges will have better coverage at less cost.

Gosh, "part-time" employees of a company that denies employees "full-time" status (and the obligations that would incur) and offers them crappy "limited liability" insurance...may now be able to get BETTER insurance.

Tragic, indeed.

Better insurance was always available for a HIGHER price, this is no different other than the fact they don't have that choice anymore.
