Ariel Castro Failed By System

ORIENT, OH—In yet another glaring indication of the nation’s broken criminal justice system, Ohio correctional officers discovered the body of inmate Ariel Castro, a Cleveland man serving a life sentence on rape and kidnapping charges, hanging from his jail cell Tuesday night, prompting strong calls for action from reformers looking to correct America’s failed correctional policy. “What happened to Ariel Castro is symptomatic of a deeply flawed rehabilitation system that provides neither justice nor security, instead allowing countless men and women each year to fall through the cracks,” prison reform advocate John Wolahan told reporters, noting that Castro, who police say was left unattended for 30 minutes at a time by security personnel, was as much a victim of the prison’s negligence as he was of society as a whole. “In a legal system concerned with harsh sentencing and ultra-punitive approaches to justice, the well-being of people like Ariel Castro—those who have to live in the system we created—is treated as a mere afterthought. And I ask you: How many Ariel Castros have to suffer before we realize the machine is broken? His death is something we all have to live with.” Reformers added that the case was especially tragic because prison employees had reportedly seen warning signs from Castro for weeks and took no action.

You can't design a system that is mistake free, but that can't be the basis for a abandoning a punishment/deterrence system altogether.

At some point you have to trust that you've implemented reasonable safeguards and that you've minimized the chances for wrongful conviction. After that, you can console yourself by recognizing that most wrongful convictions happen to bad people, not to completely innocent, law-abiding people.

If you started frying every dude with a life sentence after a year the inmates would want to riot about it pretty quick.

Your emotional appeal carries little weight because it can easily be turned around.

I have no sympathy for Castro. The girls were found in his basement. His guilt is not in question. That doesn't change the fact that the position of "I'd rather execute a thousand innocent men than let one walk free" is just about the dumbest thing I've read on the DC forum of Chiefs planet.
Who said " I'd rather execute a thousand innocent men than let one walk free"
It certainly wasn't me so don't attribute that quote to me.

I guess they should have thought about that before committing the crimes.

IMHO if you want to reduce crime and violence we have to get serious about the punishment. I would much rather punish someone severely than erode my rights to own firearms.

I am just sick and tired of having things denied because a few dipshits **** it all up for everyone else. You can't even enjoy a beer on the beach anymore around here because a small minority of dumbasses can't control themselves.

cnn.com/2013/09/06/justice/arizona-milke-release/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

So this woman's 4yr old son was murdered by her roomate. A police detective claims that she confessed to conpiracy in the murder. No other evidence (i.e. no written confession or video of interogation). She is convicted at sentenced to death.

After spending over a decade in prison a judge finally releases her b/c the police detective has a long history of lying under oath (which the jury was not aware of at the time of conviction).

Do I know with 100% certainty that she is innocent? no. I do know that that she is not "guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt."

Thankfully those convicted have the oppurtunity to appeal in the current justice system, and that they are not executed within 1 yr to save money....specially when prosecutors, police officers, and judges have strong incentive to get convictions to appear to be tough on crime and meet quotas.

'that is a price I am willing to accept'
Its not a price you accept but is a price an innocent person accept.

Well, if we eliminated victimless crimes, that would take a substantial burden off of our justice system. Stop locking people up for smoking pot and engaging in prostitution for instance. It's stupid and counterproductive.

Turns out it might not have been suicide after all.

Details come forth that he was found with pants and underwear around ankles.

Possible he died whipping his skippy and choking himself out, a la Kung Fu.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving guy.

Ball peen hammers were a brilliant early design. There is no reason to remove them from history when you have pedophiles, murders, rapists still alive.
