Fox News’ Lauren Green Doesn’t Understand Religious Scholarship

You're a Chiefs fan, yet you have an opinion on the Broncos. Isn't that odd?

I think it was reasonable to ask the question once. As for being surprised, the interview on Fox didn't surprise me at all.

I don't think there's really any reason to put scholar in quotes. His status as a scholar isn't in question by anyone giving this topic serious consideration.

Asking about it once is fine. Harping on about it after receiving a reasonable response and accusing him (falsely) of hiding his religion is a bit over the line.

I agree that she went on longer than necessary and that the part about hiding his religion showed that she didn't have good knowledge of the book (and it was an unnecessarily antagonistic question). I don't agree that it was as big a deal as people are making over it and I think the author got unnecessarily defensive though.

Agreed. Fox News will at least interview people they disagree with. MSNBC won't even do that. When's Coulter getting an invite?

In an NPR interview a section entitled “On his religious affiliation” has Aslan responding, “I wouldn’t call myself a Christian…” and going on and on from there, but he never gets around to mentioning that he is a Muslim.

That sounds weird and I thought he looked like he went into the Fox interview planning on a fight, but I don't see what it has to do with his legitimate status as a scholar. (I would add that I don't have any basis to judge how good his scholarship is, but I don't have any reason to think he's as fraudulent as the "constitutional scholar" we have in the White House).

Well, he claims Jesus didn't think he was God and that the Gospels aren't eyewitness accounts nor were they designed to be historical. These two points are, of course, hideously wrong so calling him a "scholar" might be a bit much no?

I assume he is basing these assertions on something he's researched. Are you familiar with what he is basing these assertions on? Maybe you should determine why he says what he says and go from there.

No, I think calling him a scholar is appropriate. I don't know whether he's right or wrong about those points, but scholars disagree on things from time to time. That doesn't mean the ones who are wrong aren't scholars.

I haven't read the book, but my understanding is that it is not a book "about Christianity" but is meant to be a biography of Jesus himself. Some will probably say the topics can't be seperated, but there is a difference. His life can be examined without making statements on the religion that spread following his death.

Also, Jesus is considered a prophet to Muslims, so it isn't completely outrageous that a Muslim would be interested in learning and writing about him.
There is actually a strong missed opportunity here, one that would have enounced a stronger reaction from Aslan, and probably much more heated exchanges on the intertubes.

Aslan is more than 'a Muslim.' He grew up in and passionately embraced fundamentalist evangelical Christianity. He then studied religion all those years, converted to Islam, married a Christian and remains in close contact with fundamentalist evangelicals in both sides of his family.

Now he writes this re-examination of Jesus' life and found something to akin to a revolutionary activist. And posits that the Gospels are a rosy colored review at remove of what the authors found most resonant about what THEY remembered about Jesus.

The case is there that Aslan is teetering the line between religious scholar and religious obsessive. He definitely wants to spark a new impression of Jesus' message, seemingly one more confrontational and fixated on earthbound religio-political battles.

From what I've seen [I haven't read the book, but have seen most everything he's appeared on, including appearances from before this book], he seems to be trying to finesse a line between the fervor of sects of Islam for religious observance and the strains of 'social justice' Christianity as epitomized by Cornell West. He posits that the revisionist Hellenists changed Jesus' Jewish violent confrontational revolutionary acts to a softer pacifist loving 'story' to succor favor with the Greeks and Romans and reject the dispossessed Jews.

I think there can be no argument that he, passionately, wants 'mainstream' American Christianity to view Jesus in a substantively different light.

three parter, so I linked the central site, instead of embedding three separate videos.

Also, this doesn't even begin to delve into the psychological effects of having as a surname the name of the most prominent Anglo-Christian re-imagining of the Christ.

He has, arguably, tried to hide his Muslim beliefs. At the least he's not fully disclosed them. He takes very basic facts of the Christian faith and ignores them. Put 2 & 2 together on his motive.

In John 1:31, John The Baptist states: “I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.” Right there both arguments (Gospels not a historical testimony, Jesus wasn't God) are null.

In Mark 14:61 at the crucifixion trial he is asked: "Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed one?" Jesus responded "I am: and you shall see the Son of man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven."

I'm not sure you're allowed to prove the truth of what is asserted in a book by quoting from the same book.

Maybe it's arguable, but based on my limited exposure to the guy (the video in this thread), he didn't seem reluctant to admit to being muslim. My guess is that he has a pretty loose relationship with the concept of God/Allah to begin with, although that's just a guess.

Sorry, but you don't get to take whichever version of the bible you're referencing as the ground truth against which all scholarship is tested just because you believe.
