Fox News’ Lauren Green Doesn’t Understand Religious Scholarship

You're a Chiefs fan, yet you have an opinion on the Broncos. Isn't that odd?

I don't see the big deal either, she did a bad job handling the interview, but mostly I saw this author getting overly defensive. People just want to pile on Fox News, I guess.

Yeah, he remained calm but definitely looked like he was ready for and waiting for a fight.

The guy sounds pretty interesting.
It involved FOX and appeared on the Huff Post recently, so Cave Johnson or Pitt Gorilla had to post it.

She started the interview questioning his credentials as a religious scholar based on the fact that he is a Muslim writing about Christianity. She and her producer had no interest in speaking about the content of the book, but instead about him and his credentials.

His reddit AMA from yesterday is pretty good if you want to read his actual opinion's on religions and not focused solely on him being a Muslim.

She wasn't questioning his credentials, she was questioning his motivation. It seemed like a reasonable question to ask given the controversy that his book has generated. It gives him the opportunity to do exactly what he did, which is explain himself to his potential critics. He should welcome that opportunity.

I wonder how Rachel Maddow would act if Sarah Palin came on her show to pitch a new book she wrote about Liberals. (Or Ann Coulter). Probably kind, respectful, and focused on the substance.

Kind of funny watching MSNBC pitching this video as “going viral.”
I’m sure they’ll do their best to make some big hay over it.

Are you calling Sarah Palin a political scholar?

Given she was a major party nominee for Vice President, yeah. I'd say she's pretty well qualified to write a book on politics.

Which might be acceptable if what was just framed as a, "Why write this book?" question rather than, "As a Muslim, why write this book?" She's setting up his religion as some type of notable difference when it has no bearing on the quality of scholarship or the subject matter. It's a completely irrelevant qualifier. It's an attempt to poison the well, and it backfired, as it should have.

There is quite a bit of criticism of this book on the basis of the author's religion. It may be uninformed or baseless criticism, but it exists. That's the context in which she framed her question. It's not irrelevant, especially from the point of view of someone who isn't already aware of what the book is about. It's a perfectly rational qualifier. If the Pope (or Rick Warren) wrote a book about Islam, it would be reasonable to ask why he, as a Christian, would choose to write such a book.

It's not reasonable because the question assumes bias. It could have been worded in such a way for him to explain his religion's lack of relevance to his scholarship, but it wasn't.

This is something far too many media outlets are guilty of:

"Some people say"---weasel words---followed by a question they don't have to source.

If she wanted to ask that question in such a way to engage in a productive dialogue, she could have easily said,

"Persons X,Y, and Z have called you scholarship into question due to your religious faith. What is your response to them, and the audience regarding this criticism?"

She didn't. She ****ed up and deserves to own it.
