Fox News’ Lauren Green Doesn’t Understand Religious Scholarship

You're a Chiefs fan, yet you have an opinion on the Broncos. Isn't that odd?

The author was caught lying about his qualifications, by the way.

This is from his site:

Dr. Reza Aslan, an internationally acclaimed writer and scholar of religions, is author most recently of Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.

He is the founder of AslanMedia.com, an online journal for news and entertainment about the Middle East and the world, and co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of BoomGen Studios, the premier entertainment brand for creative content from and about the Greater Middle East.

Aslan has degrees in Religions from Santa Clara University, Harvard University, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa, where he was named the Truman Capote Fellow in Fiction. An Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, he is also a member of the Los Angeles Institute for the Humanities and the Pacific Council on International Policy. He serves on the board of directors of the Ploughshares Fund, which gives grants for peace and security issues; Narrative Four, which connects people through the exchange of stories; PEN USA, which champions the rights of writers under siege around the world; and the Levantine Cultural Center, which builds bridges between Americans and the Arab/Muslim world through the arts.

Aslan's first book is the International Bestseller, No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam, which has been translated into thirteen languages, and named one of the 100 most important books of the last decade. He is also the author of How to Win a Cosmic War (published in paperback as Beyond Fundamentalism: Confronting Religious Extremism in a Globalized Age), as well as editor of two volumes: Tablet and Pen: Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle East, and Muslims and Jews in America: Commonalties, Contentions, and Complexities.

Born in Iran, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife (author and entrepreneur Jessica Jackley) where he is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside.

What is he lying about?

I found this to be intriguing:

Book Description

Release date: April 6, 2010
The wars in the Middle East have become religious wars in which God is believed to be directly engaged on behalf of one side against the other. The hijackers who attacked America on September 11, 2001, thought they were fighting in the name of God. According to award-winning writer and scholar of religions Reza Aslan, the United States, by infusing the War on Terror with its own religiously polarizing rhetoric, is fighting a similar war—a war that can’t be won.

Beyond Fundamentalism is both an in-depth study of the ideology fueling al-Qa‘ida, the Taliban, and like-minded militants throughout the Muslim world and an exploration of religious violence in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. At a time when religion and politics increasingly share the same vocabulary and function in the same sphere, Aslan writes that we must strip the conflicts of our world of their religious connotations and address the earthly grievances that always lie at its root.

How do you win a religious war? By refusing to fight in one.

I don't really understand the point of the thread. It's not the best interview in the world, but it's not bad enough to deserve the attention of a thread either.

The guy sounds pretty interesting.

I think he's pointing out how poor of a journalist this lady is. Or possibly how stupid she appears to be?

It just didn't seem that bad compared to most of the other journalists out there, to me.

I don't get where she attacked the guy...

She asked why he as a Muslim was writing a book about Christianity. He answered. She didn't yell or get all indignant...if you think the question was stupid, well, she's asking a question that her audience might not know the answer to...which is you know...the point of an interview.

I honestly don't see what the problem is...

Her follow-up was the part that made no sense. Can someone explain her "begs the question" bit?

She misused "begs the question" just like the vast majority of people do. I didn't see anything worth getting excited over with her follow-up either.
