venting about work

so I have been with my company for six years. I have spent the whole time on first shift. All of a sudden yesterday out of the blue they tell me I am to report to 2nd shift starting next Monday and chances are I will be stuck there for a couple years. It blows. I have a wife and a young daughter. it is getting me stressed to the point that I am thinking of looking for a new job.

my 1st shift schedule is great. 6am - 230pm.
2nd shift is terrible. 330pm-midnight

I will have no life at all and when my daughter starts school I will never see her.

****ing bullshit.

As far as the OP goes. I hear ya on 2nd shift hours. I have been fortunate to never have to do that shift. 3rd is a pain too but at least I can see my family everyday. What are the odds of them putting you on 3rd instead of 2nd?

Ouch, not to be Mr. Obvious or anything, but stress seems inevitable no matter what the decision. With that said, I genuinely hope that the decision you make ends up working out and results in you being the most stress free. Well wishes from me, man.

I worked for the railroad for 12 years and worked all shifts.

I loved the 2nd shift.

Yes it does **** up your night life but I used that as a positive.

Went home stayed up a bit and hit the sack.

Got up and worked out 4 days a week.

I was never in better shape than when I worked evenings.

Graveyards are another story, I don't sleep well in the day.

Any chance that they don't like you for some reason? I've worked at places where they would put people they don't like on shitty shifts in the hope that they would quit instead of having to fire them. Not trying to be a downer; I was just thinking that there may be an issue that, if resolved, might get you back on days if it gets cleared up.
