Guns, the Great Equalizer: 10 Year Old Boy Trades Fire With Home Invaders

Two would-be armed robbers got more than they expected on Monday. After forcing their way into a Brooklyn home, one of the suspects chased a resident who ran for cover in an adjacent bathroom. As he reached through a door with his handgun, a woman slammed it on his arm, forcing him to drop the firearm. At that point, say witnesses, a 10 year old boy living in the home picked up the gun and opened fire.

One of the suspects returned fire and then promptly fled the scene.

NYPD reports that no one was injured in the altercation. Police are still searching for the individuals responsible for the home invasion.

Okay, so now you're arguing that not only should we make sure the right of decent, law-abiding citizens to own firearms shall not be infringed, but in fact we shouldn't even try to keep them out of the hands of hardened, bloodthirsty criminals. Right?

You accomplish nothing by passing laws that criminals will ignore out side of increasing regulations for the law abiding.

Trying to cure violent crime by going after guns is like trying to cure a cold by blowing your nose. You are attacking a symptom, not the disease.

Guns are not the problem. Bad people are the problem. Stop trying to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and start trying to keep criminals off the street. Stop turning the bad guys into the victims and start prosecuting them. Stop worrying about their humanity and your conscience and start sentencing the death penalty. These two actions will do more to curb crime than any gun legislation on the books could ever dream of accomplishing.

Quit creating more hoops for me to jump through to practice my RIGHT just so you can feel all warm and fuzzy about yourself while pretending you are taking a stance against crime.

You're on the right track!

I'll add: Start prosecuting felonies while using a firearm. LA, New York and Chicago are the most lax. Guess who has the highest gun crime rate?

Keep the dangerous felons in prison. Stop letting them back on the street!!!

There is something about this idea of gun crimes that has been bugging me. Oh sure, I've used the term in these discussions before but, it has Never seemed right.

By differentiating a gun crime from any other crime you help advance the notion that guns are a part of the problem. To differentiate between violent and non-violent crime is one thing. To specify a violent crime as a gun crime because one was used is as preposterous as specifying a murder as a hate crime because a minority was the victim. Murder is hateful regardless of the skin color, or sexual or religious orientation the person/s slain. A violent crime is violent regardless of the tool (if any) used in carrying it out.

Prosecute all felonies. Convict if guilty. Sentence to death for any crime involving murder, rape or child molestation. Wether or not a gun was used should have no bearing on any of it.

I suppose it would be pointless to mention the guy that shot up a bunch of people in an extended rampage through Santa Monica with a semi-automatic rifle today. We all know what each other will say, and how the thread will end, right?

And it happened in the No 1 rated gun control state. Is CA getting all it's guns from mexico? Did they not do enough? The answer for most of the politicians in the state will of course be no. It's only enough when ever gun is gone.

The irony is, the more shootings there are the less likely there will be more gun control. Why media saturation and desensitization. It's the same reason people aren't crying out to prevent auto deaths. They happen so regularly and people are so desensitized to it that it's not news when it happens.

For some shootings we're already there. There's a reason why inner city gun deaths don't make major news, people are simply desensitized to them and it doesn't make for good ratings. People stopped caring when one gang banger shot up another.

The saddest part about sandy hook is that the dems lost any chance to do anything positive from it. They could have dropped the gun control which had no chance of success and focused on a revamped mental health system. In exchange for no bill on gun control you likely would have gotten enough Republicans to go along with it.

Even if it didn't stop every shooting it would have likely made a positive impact in the lives of millions. Instead we had an utter failure of leadership and people pushing ideological bigotry that resulted in no change to anything. In the end everyone loses.

Sadly the way our political system is structured the problem is only going to get worse. We elect the very worst members of our society as our representatives.

If it is pointless to mention it then why mention it?

And that is really the only response that any one needs to give to the story.

So do you think, in general, strict gun control laws in a particular state cause a rise in unchecked gun violence, or do you think a rise in gun violence causes legislators to respond with increasingly strict gun control? Whichever you choose, why?

It could be one in one place and the other some where else.

However, as a general rule, I lean towards strict gun control laws leading to more illegal shootings. To answer why I'll ask you a question: if you were to go on a shooting spree where would you choose, a location where people could be armed, or place where no one is allowed to have a gun?

Further more, gun laws are not only going to allow in an increase of gun related violence, they also lead to an increase in crime in general. The tougher and more illegal it is to get your hands on guns, the more gunners will be popping up on the black market.

Gun laws do not prevent crime, they create it.
