A way around it? Kosher Certification Program Bans All GMO Ingredients

Date: Thursday, 25-Apr-2013 23:06:23

In Response To: Federal bill would require labeling of genetically modified food (RumorMail)

Maybe its time to 'Look for the Kosher Label'?

As much as I hate to admit it, this should make a big difference in getting rid of those GMOs or at least forcing them to label. Maryhrt

Kosher Certification Program Bans All GMO Ingredients

April 25th, 2013

One group after another is denouncing the genetically modified poison on grocery store shelves, adding to the chorus of voices demanding real untainted food.

Natural Food Certifiers has announced today that any food product that contains GMOs is no longer eligible to be certified as kosher under their “Apple K” kosher certification program.

“NFC was very proud to introduce the first “Natural Only” kosher supervision,” said NFC Director Rabbi Reuven Flamer. “It’s a logical application of our principle, ‘Start Naturally. Stay that Way.’ Therefore, the Natural Apple K cannot be placed on a product that contains GMOs,” Flamer explained.

“While according to the strict letter of Kosher food law a GMO food ingredient is not prohibited, in our view it is not natural. Additionally, there is a Torah (religious)-based law to ‘guard your health’. GMOs are the number-one growing concern among health-conscious consumers and for businesses in the natural and organic food market, as well as in the conventional food industry,” said Rabbi Flamer.

“Recent studies show that GMOs may cause various kinds of health problems from digestive disturbances to food allergies, and that GMOs require more herbicides, which is really the opposite reason why GMOs were touted to be so environmentally helpful in the first place,” Rabbi Flamer added. “For all of the many reasons that GMOs raise a red flag, consumers simply don’t want them in their foods, and our clients want to accommodate their customers.”

Over the next 12 months, the company will phase out the certification of any product that contains GMO ingredients, and will no longer accept applications for certification of products that contain GMOs.

Apple K KosherNFC has numerous natural food certification programs, including USDA Organic certification, Kosher
Certification (under the “Apple K” label), Vegan certification, and Gluten Guard, a gluten-free assurance program.

Each product submitted by a manufacturer for approval is carefully analyzed. The press release explains the process for all of the certification categories. “The process may include, but is not limited to, a request and review of the ingredient deck including country of origin and certificate of analysis, product testing, as well as inspection of manufacturing facilities.”

Whether or not your faith requires you to follow the Kosher food laws, this news should be celebrated by anyone who hopes to see the demise of Monsanto and the products created by their mad scientists. While countries across the world are banning GMOs, the wheels are moving slowly in North America to even have GMOs labeled so that consumers can make an informed decision. To have a large demographic refuse to allow genetically modified material in their food is yet another volley against the corruption that is evident in the unholy alliance of the FDA and Monsanto.

Although just a rumor I hope it's true! Kosher ftw!

New GMO labeling bill will be the ultimate test between the will of the people versus the greed and power of the biotech industry

Monday, April 29, 2013 by: Michelle Goldstein

(NaturalNews) In an exciting move in Washington, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) together have sponsored new federal legislation that requires the labeling of all genetically engineered food in the U.S. The Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act is the first national labeling bill to be introduced in Congress since 2010. U.S. citizens have demonstrated overwhelming support to label GMO foods in this country. Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology, has argued that GMO labeling could bring an end to the dangerous growth of GMOs. Genetically modified foods have consistently been shown to be dangerous to health in studies conducted by independently funded researchers. It is time for the U.S. to join other industrialized nations in their mandatory labeling policies.

Federal Labeling Bill enjoys widespread support
On April 24th, the new Federal Labeling Bill was proposed with the support of nine senators and 22 representatives. The bipartisan labeling bill has been supported by over 100 organizations and businesses including the Environmental Working Group, Just Label It, the Center for Environmental Health, and Lundberg Family Farms. This bill follows the passage last month of an amendment to the Senate budget resolution to require the labeling of GE fish.

Overwhelming majority of citizens are demanding GMO labeling
Consistently nearly 95 percent of American have demonstrated support for GM labeling. In October 2011, the Center for Food Safety filed a legal petition with the FDA to require labeling of all food produced using genetic engineering. In 2012, 55 members of Congress wrote a letter to FDA commissioner Hamburg in support of the petition. Over one million public comments have been submitted to the FDA supporting the CFS's legal petition for labeling. This is the largest public response ever received by the FDA.

In response to consumers demand for labeling of GM foods, 37 GE food labeling bills have been introduced in 21 states in 2013. Hawaii, Washington, Indiana, Missouri and Vermont are among the states with bills pending.

An important grass roots effort is being made to fight GMOs with an international protest against Monsanto. US citizens are participating across the country on May 25th, joining with citizens around the world. See http://occupy-monsanto.com/ for additional information.

US must join the majority of industrialized nations that require labeling
Sixty four countries require labeling of GE foods including Australia, South Africa, Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and the entire European Union. It is time for the US to label GMOs.

Genetically Engineered foods have no safety record
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine reports that "several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM foods". GE foods have been linked to infertility, GI issues, organ damage, insulin and immune dysfunction and death. Thousands of sheep, buffalo and goats grazing on GE cotton in India have died. See http://www.responsibletechnology.org/ for more details.

GMO labels can significantly end dangerous GMO growth
The US has a strong market economy that is very sensitive to consumer demand. If GMO labeling laws reduce demand for GMO labeled foods, the market will change to meet this demand. This can equate to less GMO foods and more safe GMO free foods for consumers.

Take action
Contact legislators and ask for their support for the New Federal Labeling Bill. See http://salsa3.salsalabs.com for more details. Join fellow citizens in the March against Monsanto on May 25th. Check http://occupy-monsanto.com/ for more information. There is an important momentum for GM labels and it is critical that citizen voices be heard.

Where are the studies by fish to prove GMO's are perfectly safe?

This is really sad if you think that consumers shouldn't be protected. Perhaps we should go back to the days of diseased meat plants and pharma companies stuffing sugar pills and selling it off as medicine. But I probably deserve diseased meat, because I should be raising my own cows.

But yet, you're selfish enough to demand changes to this entire system, which you had absolutely no part of. Changes which would raise the price of nearly every item you buy. Which you would of course also bitch about. It would also reduce the profit of every single one of the people that actually had a hand in bringing that food to you, so you could simply consume it and make more demands. Each step of the process above was carried out by a different person, and they all would lose profit and be forced to make expensive changes their entire system.
What "demands"? That we ask businesses to label exactly what they put in their food? I'm not saying we should ban anything. I'm saying that there should be full transparency about exactly what is going into our foods, and then people can decide.

Quote:
And you know what the result would be? 99.9999% of the products in the supermarket contain GMOs. But now each of those items costs at least $1 more than it used to. Because expensive changes had to be made at damn near every step of the process from planting to the supermarket shelf. All because you have an irrational fear of something you've been eating your entire life.

It disgusts me how ignorant people can demand changes to something they don't understand and had no part of. Especially when those demanding changes can't even identify why GMOs are bad for you. They posts pics of of ears of corn, and supposedly let the squirrel's taste preferences determine the quality and safety of GMOs. Squirrel brains seem appropriate I suppose...
I don't really care about GMOs. It doesn't affect what I buy and it probably never will. In much the same way I don't always buy organic. But irrational fear or not, people have a right to know what they are buying. You're right that much of the food in the food supply will have GMO in it. And a lot of people won't care, because they can get it cheaper. But there are some who do. And if you do care about it, who are you to tell them that they have to be forced to like it and accept it?
