Asshat Republican Wants First Graders to Work for Food

Making Children -we're talking first grade to sixth grade- be forced to work to get a meal is the ultimate in "compassionate conservatism." JFC, is there no end to the idiocy?

http://www.wsaz.com/home/headlines/W...200267021.html

A West Virginia lawmaker floated the idea during floor debate in the state's House of Delegates of having school children work as janitors, the Associated Press reports.

The West Virginia House recently passed a school lunch bill on an overwhelmingly bipartisan basis, by a vote of 89-9, according to the Associated Press. The Feed to Achieve Act would establish nonprofits to solicit private donations to go toward providing every child with a breakfast and lunch at no cost.

But one Republican suggested that was a misguided notion.

"I think it would be a good idea if perhaps we had the kids work for their lunches: trash to be taken out, hallways to be swept, lawns to be mowed, make them earn it," Del. Ray Canterbury (R-Greenbrier) said during floor debate. "If they miss a lunch or they miss a meal they might not, in that class that afternoon, learn to add, they may not learn to diagram a sentence, but they'll learn a more important lesson."

Canterbury argued that providing students with free lunches would destroy their work ethic and show them "there's an easy way," the Charleston Gazette reported.

"I'm offended anybody in this body would dare say a child has to work for their meals," responded Del. Meshea Poore (D-Kanawha), according to the Gazette. "I can't believe someone would say a first-grader, a second-grader ... a fifth-grader has to labor before they eat. This isn't an entitlement bill."

According to a 2004 report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, children in West Virginia [PDF] were almost twice as likely to live in neighborhoods with a high poverty rate, compared to the national average. The group also ranks West Virginia 47th nationally for education, with 79 percent of eighth graders not proficient in math and 73 percent of fourth graders not proficient in reading.

A national survey in 2012 from Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry campaign found a majority of teachers report pupils coming to school hungry, which the group says makes it more difficult for students to concentrate.

Canterbury's suggestion was similar to a remark made by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich during a debate in the Republican presidential primary, when Gingrich suggested making poor students become janitors at their schools.

The Feed to Achieve Act now heads to the desk of West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, who is expected to sign it.

People are extracting only the kids on free and reduced lunches from the article, and I don't think that's what the guy was saying.

If it's means what I think it means, that's not all that different from what goes on right now in some schools. I remember in my elementary years that it was school policy to have teachers assign kids clean-up chores around the classroom before they could go home. They included wiping out the sinks, washing the chalkboard, picking up all the paper from the floor, etc. I did it something at the end of every school day from 1st through 5th grade.
cleaning erasers outside? who didn't want to do that?

It's also NEVER going to happen in the current environment because such holistic pursuits aren't measurable on test scores (similar to the ridiculousness of most elementary kids getting a single 15 minute recess per day because they need the time for test prep instead... even though the kids will learn better if they're getting more physical activity).
I did this as well in school. It was fun.

Canterbury has a kindred spirit in St. Sen. Stacey Campfield of Tenn. That clown proposed that if a kid is failing in school that their family's welfare should be cut. No pressure....

This was covered on The Daily Show so it was no surprise when they revealed that the innovative Campfield publicly stated that he believes the scourge of AIDS was created when a man had sex with a monkey. When is his salary going to be cut for failing at thought?!?!?

What do you do with the kids who are on free and reduced lunches whose parents lie about their income to get their kids lunches paid for?

Believe it or not, but we actually have a problem with under reporting at our high school. That's largely because the kids are responsible for taking the form home and getting parents to fill it out, and the kids are often too embarassed to go on Free and Reduced by High School, so they lose the forms.

I was a school administrator for 12 years and saw both sides of the spectrum. A school board member came up 1 year in my annual check (you had to have a certain percentage of incomes verified on the free/reduced lunch forms). I told my bookkeeper about it and told her it would be a hell of a lot easier to just pick someone else, but I couldn't do that and sleep at night. Naturally I never got a positive vote from her when my contract came up for renewal after that.

Well, it's a valid argument if the person wanting the testing is saying it's "in order to save money."

With the whole drug testing to receive welfare, I think it's a decent idea but I think there should be an option for people that fail to enroll in counseling with still receiving benefits. As others have pointed out, that if you just kick them off, there's a good chance they'll just become a burden to society it other ways such as turning to theft and winding up in the prison system where they'll still just cost tax payers.

Back to this topic though. If the parents lie, sure kick the kid off of free lunches. And if that kid is still not getting enough food, you get DCFS involved. If parents want to tie chores to a child's pudding, fine, so long as it never enters the realm of child abuse. The state does not and should not have the authority to do that to a minor though.

Work is punishment? I think I’m seeing the problem.
Do you consider your work to be punishment? I would assume not.
Until such a time as I can earn a living for sitting around and looking hawt, not gonna happen in this lifetime, I consider my work to be a reasonable compromise and I receive fair compensation for it.
Now, I assume you know I like you and will seek out your opinion when I’ve seen you post in a topic so I apologize in advance if this seems a bit harsh but if you’re sitting around watching kids live in homeless squalor then shame on you. Get them in contact with your county health department. They’re a “non-reporting agency” so even if they’re here illegally they by law cannot report it. They will, however, give them free health screenings and get them setup on WIC.

http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic

This is also beginning the process to get their parents on welfare and/or disability and into affordable housing.

http://www.hud.gov/offices/cpd/affordablehousing/

The majority of the reason people live homeless is because they’re either mentally disabled or just don’t know that there are programs out there to help them.
If you really want to help those children the below link will get you started and do more good for them than sending them home with a pity lunch.
