Joe Biden's Paris Hotel Cost $585,000 For One-Night Vice Presidential Stay

A $585,000.50 bill for one night at a hotel is either the result of an unimaginable amount of room service, or, if you're a member of Vice President Joe Biden's posse, it's just another night in Paris.

That's per a contract awarded to the Hotel Intercontinental Paris Le Grand, which hosted Biden's one-night stay during a diplomatic trip to Europe in early February.

Despite the eye-popping figure, administration officials swear Biden hadn't been ransacking every mini-bar in sight.

The costs "are in line with high-level travel across multiple administrations," explained an unnamed State Department official to ABC News.

The official added, "The contract costs cover the entire range of support, including accommodations for military, communications, secret service staff, and other support professionals. Security experts are also required to travel in advance of the president or vice president. Safety and security are not negotiable."

Unlike other government contracts, hotel stays for top U.S. government officials are not subject to a competitive bidding process. A justification obtained by The Weekly Standard also cites "security concerns" as the primary reason for this.

A second contract, unearthed by The Weekly Standard, shows Biden's stay in London was a (comparative) bargain, costing taxpayers just $459,338.65, more than $100,000 cheaper than his night in Paris.

While news of the trip's cost garnered predictable outrage among conservatives, others had fun with it. Joked one Twitter user, "VP Joe Biden has been officially banned from using Priceline's 'Name Your Own Price' feature."

Most of the cost is the necessary security and it actually includes more than one night for the advance team that gets there to set shit up and make security arrangements. No question it is a lot of money, but it is apparently the norm for this type of thing. The Pres and VP are going to travel. It is part of their jobs. As much as I hated Bush, I didn't freak about this kind of thing because it is just stupid to do so.

Either party. They need to travel. They need to have security. It's expensive copared to you and me traveling, but it is nothing compared to the cost of a war or an expansion of health care. It's equivalent to the decision to chew a piece of gum on a typical family budget.

Tell me what is childlike?

"Bush did it too"

..if you think a half mil a night or 2.5 million a week for a HOTEL is even remotely reasonable, then it's no wonder the country is 16 trillion in debt.

Making Sense Of Biden's $1 Million Hotel Bill In Europe

So much for Amtrak Joe. The government spent $1 million on two nights in Europe for the Vice President and his entourage last month, according to government contracts posted here. CNN confirmed with the State Department that the contracts are legitimate and calls them a rare look at White House travel expenses.

The eye-popping numbers: $585,000 for one night at the Hotel Intercontinental Paris Le Grand and $459,000 for a night at the Hyatt Regency London the Churchill Hotel. (Plus $321,000 for a limousine company, although Biden's own limousine is flown over for such trips.)

The nice, round $1 million-for-two-nights number is lighting up Twitter with outrage and jabs. But the cost breaks down to about $500 per night at a five-star hotel in the world's most expensive cities. Nothing weird about that.

So why is the bill so high? The charges cover 136 rooms, not just Biden's. His entourage includes Secret Service, military, a medical unit, and a team that screens and serves his food, CNN reports. The room block may include reporters, though the government doesn't pick up their tab. Some rooms might be used as office space.

Some members of the entourage stay more than one night. The contract for the London hotel is for 893 room nights, which sounds like a lot, but it averages out to 6.5 nights per room.

The cost could include paying guests to relocate, too.

CNN ran the figures by officials from past Republican administrations, all of who said the costs were reasonable. One former senior White House staffer who supervised travel arrangements told CNN that it sounds normal to have as many as 136 rooms.

The government doesn't let hotels compete for these contracts or security reasons. Evidently it doesn't use Priceline, either.

We can count statists like cdcox, KChiefer to justify this extravagance because Biden has a posse to bring along.

The question that should be asked here is regardless of party, why does the U.S. VP, have to travel anywhere in the first place?

He doesn't. He has no official functions that authorize such a trip. It's a do-less post and breaking ties in the Senate doesn't require it.

So it is PURE WASTE!

It doesn't stop the statists though.

'Er....not the same economy though. I don't approve of this thing generally but in a bad economy it's a bit like Marie Antoinette.

or what is the importance of Joe Biden?

However, regardless of success of the trip, if truly a government business trip (I am sure that has loose interpetations). it is the cost of business when your top government officials travel.

Good Point!

He was breaking a tie, and had to go to Paris to think about it in a different environment perhaps?
