Dad's photo of son with .22 on facebook brings the cops wearing tactical gear

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-57...cops-to-house/

Quote:
I am sure there are several 11-year-old boys who are terribly proficient at handling a gun.

But, given that I wouldn't trust an 11-year-old boy with a popsicle, I would just as well not be anywhere near them.

This, however, doesn't appear to have been the policy of the authorities in New Jersey. They were allegedly alarmed by a Facebook photo of Josh Moore, aged 11, holding a .22 rifle, and they allegedly wanted to get very near him.

The photo had been posted by his father, Shawn, to Facebook. It showed Josh, in his camouflage outfit and rather bright sneakers.

Shawn Moore told his story to a forum on the Delaware Open Carry Web site.

He said he received a text from his wife that police and alleged members of the Department of Youth and Family Services had paid their home a visit. It was, allegedly, not a social call.

Indeed, he posted a picture of police in what he describes as "tactical gear."

He says the authorities demanded to enter the house in Carneys Point, N.J., and check his guns. His lawyer, on a cell phone speakerphone, was privy to all the discussions.

Moore insisted that he wouldn't open the safe where his guns are kept-- as no warrant was allegedly presented to him -- and that a lady from the Department of Youth and Family Services refused to identify herself.

The Associated Press says that neither the department nor the police were prepared to comment on the alleged visitation and its purpose.

Moore said none of his visitors had actually seen the photo. He alleges they had merely received a phone call reporting its details.

The rifle was reportedly Josh Moore's 11th birthday gift.

Somehow, guns and Facebook have proved to constitute an often uncomfortable marriage of the medium and the message.

Recently, a Pennsylvania police chief was suspended after an especially fetching image of him, a comely lady friend, and a couple of guns appeared on the site.

The more we insist on exposing who we are to people we don't know, the more hullabaloo seems to inevitably develop.

That is the scariest .22 rifle I've ever seen.

Obviously, it needs to be banned immediately.

Another article mentioned that they can't prosecute someone for filing a false child abuse report. That said its still time to lawyer up and they absolutely should file a civil lawsuit against the person who reported them. There may not be a legal case but there is definately a civil case to be made. We need to start nailing people to the wall for harassment via cop. Emotional damages for the fear of getting your child removed because someone is a bigot is unacceptable!

Oh really? Whatever happened to being faced with your accuser? I believe it's unConstitutional to not divulge this.

That looks like an assault rifle to me, how do you determine whether this kid has got all his marbles or not, I'd like to see somebody walk up to him in a pair of bathers and demand the gun. He might just start shooting for the fun of it, oops jus shot 3 cops.

I was proficient with a .22 when I was 7.

It didn't look like that, though.

WTF?!?! I have all kinds of pics like that and when I went duck hunting and when I got my first gun (I was 9).

Govt doesn't want it's people to have guns...it's obvious and they're doing all they can at the federal level to take that away, using retarded scare tactics that 1 out of millions of people may be crazy enough to shoot kids at a school - so everyone should give up their rights.

It's like the teacher telling the class to be quiet during reading time, then the class ****up talks during that time on purpose and the teacher takes away recess for everyone because of it. Same kinda childish bullshit.

BEP - when it comes to social services, they don't have to provide anything. And whoever turns you in is always protected (as to identity).

I think I posted about this a year ago on this board (or it might have been a Cardinal board I am on, but whatever) -

I was target practicing with my 9 year old son using a single shot .22 in a large field with a bluff behind it on my property. Completely safe...I was loading the gun as well as kneeling behind him helping him aim etc, etc...

Long story short you could see it from the road and someone reported it. Out comes every social service worker in the state of South Dakota. At the time I put it down to all the white eyes thinking the Lakota were uprising once again.

Anyway, I explained to them what we were doing etc and etc and nothing came of it. Still, I learned my lesson - you do things like this where folks cannot see ya. I'll be damned if I would post a picture of it on facebook.

This is horrible, governtment overreach again. People keep voting away their rights one at a time without noticing what they are doing. And what they are doing is turning this country into the USSA police state.
