Do you support the outright ban of "assault" rifles?

Simple...

yes or no.

This thread brought to you by a comment in DC stating we would be surprised by how few people in DC would support the ban. Figured we might as well get numbers.

So the city with the strictest gun control is headed to its 500th homicide and the heavy bulk of them are from guns.
Gun controls in cities and states are incredibly difficult to measure results on, because they're just cities and states. It's too easy to obtain a gun across city or state lines and bring it back in.

Compare that to a federal law, which would apply the same everywhere, and the federal government has the resources that the states and city governments don't have to monitor what comes in and comes out.

I think there is really no need to take weapons that are currently legal to own. I would support stopping the sale of further weapons if:

They are primarily military weapons intended for current battlefield service
Are or can easily be converted to full auto.

I would support stopping the sale of:

Clips above 20 rounds
Armor piercing bullets
Other military type ammo (incendiary, tracer rounds and the like)
Any military ordinance from setup machine guns, mortars up to and including nuclear weapons.

Is there a single gun advocate that could live with this?

I'm pretty sure you don't give a shit who knows what about guns, seeing how the #1 supporters of gun control in the country are law enforcement, who I'm pretty sure we can agree know plenty about gun functionality.

  • The previous assault weapons ban didn't work.
  • I don't think assault weapons are on the same level as a bazooka's, air to air missiles etc. and need to be banned.
  • Yes, there is additional danger. We would be safer with an assault ban. But, we would be safer if we outlawed neo-nazi's, monitored our own citizens and restricted free speech more. There is always risk associated with freedom.
  • The 2nd amendment is clear. It's just not about protecting our home or hunting deer.
Unless you want to change the constitution, it is a risk to our safety that a free democracy must keep in place. If we don't respect the constitution, we will fail as a democracy.
I've already responded to the first point. The second point is a fallacy -- just because something isn't as dangerous as something drastically worse, doesn't mean it itself isn't dangerous.

The third point is a fair point -- but we do violate freedom of speech all the time if we deem it necessary to public order to do so. So goes it with the 2nd amendment.

The fourth point, I agree with more or less. The 2nd amendment, or at least how it's interpreted legally, is clear. But that doesn't have any bearing on an assault weaspons ban. Which was constitutional.

How many people were murdered by a rifle of some type in any of our Western allies that year?

Law enforcement also agrees that it would be really nice if there were no miranda rights, no right to an attorney, no right to privacy, and no right to question their authority.

Not true. Many sheriffs departments are already stating that they wont support suggested bans. And last I read, the US police chiefs group was against the bans also.

Weighing that against the fact that they have no practical usage, and I have trouble justifying their usage in the hands of civilians.
The problem that I have with the logic in the first sentence is that you are taking a singular event (a single mass shooting) and saying that the 14 deaths caused in that one single act committed by a single person justifies infringing on the rights of millions.

Also... the weapon most often used in mass shootings? Not an assault weapon. Its not even close.
