I didn't say anything about staying afloat. That is just one way I created something without having to raise my prices, which every one complains it will lead to.

Truth is inflation has inflated, what you paid for something 20 years ago is now higher and the minimum wage should reflect that.

Last night, Obama called for Congress to enact a $9 minimum wage.
It's a controversial call (some people argue that a minimum wage destroys low-end jobs), and it's unlikely to come to pass in this Congress. But in 2014, it's conceivable.

Anyway, the fast food companies (Burger King, Wendy's, McDonald's) are all down today. And it seems possible there's a connection, though it's impossible to know.

McDonald's is getting hit the most.

My first job was 18 years ago. I made minimum wage ($4.20) as a 16 year old grocery sacker before quickly getting a raise and later promoted to stocking shelves.

That job is all but extinct. Instead of baggers, you have a little contraption that checkers use to bag groceries.

But wait...half the stores I go to have self checkouts. No cashier on those lines, either. If it makes sense to reduce cashiers and baggers at a minimum wage of $7.50, it's going to make sense to eliminate them entirely at $9.00.

How many hundreds of thousands of jobs is that right there?

Raise it or don't. It doesn't impact me much either way, but it's going to have horrible unintended consequences for a lot of people who are just glad to have a job.

Part of making a low minimum wage is the incentive to do better for yourself. Unfortunately, now that our communist government offers welfare, unemployment, food stamps, rent subsidies, paying for phones and utilities, etc, there is no incentive for people who have no pride to better themselves.

I admitted last night that there was a raw nerve there when I read it, so yeah I probably fired back a little stronger than I normally would. The Governor of Illinois proposed last week that their state raise minimum wage to $10.00 dollars an hour.

That should run more businesses out of that all ready fail state.

Raising the Min wage to $9 will hurt poor people more than help them in my opinion. Why? Well, every grocery store will raise their prices to offset the increase in wages. So will Walmart, Target, Home centers, lawn care........and then there are the mom n pop places that already struggle. Child care rates just went up....now it costs that working family MORE for child care.

The chain reaction is that everything get's higher. You're a business that already pays 2nd tier employees $10, now you're moving new employees to $9. Guess who wants a raise? You move the 10 to 12, and then 14 expects to be $16.

The people who end up suffering more are the ones already struggling who are now paying $1 more for milk and bread.

I've mentioned before that I worked in fast food for 8.5 years in my youth. I used to manage Taco Bells. Back when there was a Taco Bell Corp. A substantial bump in the minimum wage eliminates jobs in fast food. It not only eliminates current jobs but it stalls the hiring process, slowing down the creation of new jobs. You end up with salaried employees making up the difference in productivity of your smaller labor force. Those creative solutions that someone alluded to include outsourcing food prep. You end up with shittier food, less effective customer service and dirtier stores. If the bump is high enough those changes become permanent as they did at Taco Bell.
