PS3 owners in search of a universal remote, look no more...

I'm guessing several people have solved this already but I wanted to post here just in case. I recently ditched Dish Network in favor of an antenna so I had to kiss my Dish Network universal remote goodbye.

In trying to get my TV remote to work with my sound bar, it became obvious that I needed to just by a newer universal remote. However, I figured if I was going to spend money, why not get something that could control my PS3 too?

As everybody knows, the PS3 uses bluetooth for the controllers and does not contain an IR receiver (I have read the PS4 is the same). Therefore, you cannot control the PS3 with any conventional universal remote.

Logitech has an adapter that you can use with the Logitech Harmony line of remotes but then you're looking at $100 or more for a solution.

Sony makes a PS3 remote but it can only control your TV and a sound system. It can't control other peripherals and it only supports Sony sound systems. It won't control non-Sony audio components.

After a bit of research, I found this baby: http://www.smklink.com/products/blu-...-playstation-3

I bought it at Amazon for $26. It contains both a bluetooth radio and IR radio, so it can control traditional A/V components as well as the PS3.

It was simple to pair with the PS3 and took all of 5 minutes. As with every other universal remote I've tried, it didn't work with my Sharp sound bar at all. None of the 3 codes provided worked.

That's when I discovered that it also had a "learning" mode just like the much more expensive Logitech's.

I took the little remote that came with my sound bar and in a couple of minutes, I not only had it powering the sound bar on and off and adjusting the volume, I also had it programmed to change equalizer settings and adjust surround sound parameters. The old Dish Network remote couldn't even do that.

Similarly, the Dish Network remote could bring up my TV's settings menu but the arrow keys didn't work to navigate it. I put the Blu-Link in learning mode and programmed it's arrow keys directly from the arrow keys on the TV remote.

I've never had a remote that COMPLETELY eliminated the need for any other remotes. This thing is way cool.

Sucks that it isn't compatible with the PS4 or I would be all over it.

Do you know for sure it isn't? I would guess it's because Sony hasn't created a bluetooth profile for it yet. Apparently, this remote was enabled in a firmware update from Sony, so they had control over whether or not it would ever work...

It should be able to. It has all of the buttons necessary and can literally learn any command from another remote.

on the Amazon page somebody tried it on a PS4 and it wouldn't work. I also couldn't get my PS3 bluetooth headset to work on my PS4. Of course, that one makes no sense at all because blutooth is blutooth.

It doesn't quite work that way.

Bluetooth receivers have a set of functional profiles which determine what the connected peripheral actually does. It's a set of instructions for inputs and outputs.

On a PC, you have almost the entire range of possible device profiles, so if you connect a Bluetooth device, it usually knows what to do with it.

On the PS3, there are a limited number of profiles, all of which are written directly into the firmware by Sony.

The fact that your headset doesn't work isn't surprising, unfortunately. I imagine it is Sony's way of forcing you to buy a new one.
