Saudi Cleric Beats 5-Year-Old Daughter To Death, Receives Light Sentence

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Online activists in Saudi Arabia are calling for harsher punishments for child abuse after reports that a prominent cleric received only a light sentence after confessing to the beating death of his 5-year-old daughter.

The social media campaign gaining momentum Sunday is the latest attempt to use the Internet to pressure the kingdom's ultraconservative rulers.

Saudi media reports say Fayhan al-Ghamdi, a frequent guest on Islamic TV programs, was arrested in November on charges of killing the girl. The reports said he questioned the child's virginity.

Saudi media say he was freed last week after serving a short prison term and agreeing to pay $50,000 in "blood money" to avoid a possible death sentence.

The money was presumably offered to the girl's mother or other relatives.

Blaming religion or people for stupid shit done in the name of religion is really a chicken/egg to me. Religion is made/practiced by people and is therefore flawed. People are flawed by the religion they blindly practice.

I really didn't know what your WWII ref was for other than to show an atrocity that can't be matched in US history.

We did terrible things in WWII as well. Granted the good far outweighed the bad, however it does not, nor will it ever give us a clean slate. They should be coupled. Not unlike how the right is coupling the Dems to the Nazis of late. Deny it if you like, it's a fact.

Yeah, you don't take offense when someone accuses someone else of being a Nazi, but you do take offense when someone says that the US has allowed ACTUAL crimes like what happened in Saudi Arabia.
