North Carolina Rep. Wants To Ban People On Welfare From Playing The Lottery

If you’re living on welfare in North Carolina, you may soon be out of luck when it comes to the lottery. Raleigh-Durham’s ABC affiliate WTVD-TV is reporting that lawmakers in that state are proposing legislation that would bar people on welfare or in bankruptcy from purchasing lottery tickets.

As reporter Anna Laurel explains, “the lawmaker drafting this legislation told us today that the vendor selling the lottery ticket would be penalized if they know the person is on welfare or in bankruptcy, which has some questioning if this law really solves any problems.”

The Republican congressman behind the bill, Rep. Paul Stam laid out his reasoning by saying, “We’re giving them welfare to help them live, and yet by selling them a ticket, we’re taking away their money that is there to provide them the barest of necessities.”

But as the Raleigh news team discovered, local lottery vendors have serious concerns. One clerk was quoted as saying, “I don’t feel comfortable to ask my customers what their financial status is… it’s not my business.”

Meanwhile, North Carolina’s NAACP president Rev. William Barber said that while his organization doesn’t “agree with the lottery to start with” he would prefer to have Rep. Stam focus on larger issues “Rather than Mr. Stam having a side argument, ask him to stop blocking labor rights for poor people and working people. Ask him to have a real conversation about real wage.”

The reason I think this is a bad idea...Person A on welfare buys a lottery ticket anyway with cash and wins $1000. This kind of transaction requires the State Lottery to get involved. They see that this person is on Welfare and denies them the $1000. Everyone is outraged.

The policy does make sense from a "you shouldn't play the lotto if you don't have the money to play it", but I'm someone who is all for much less government. This doesn't make sense from that standpoint.

If conservatives are going to bitch about class warfare, it's equally ridiculous to tell someone in welfare how to spend their money. Nor does it make any sense that the government would collect buttloads of money from consumers who aren't even allowed to cash in.

This regulation is stupid on a whole bunch of levels.

And before anyone chimes in with the lousy argument that because they are getting government handouts they should be held under scrutiny... Think long and hard about handouts big businesses get that often get invested into increased executive compensation or perks like private transportation.

What is being disingenuous? A lot of judgment over how welfare recipients spend their money but defensive when anyone dares ask how a business owner or rich person spends tax breaks. It's hypocritical.

I am not on the left. I am not saying you are in this group. I am pointing to the overall reaction from the right, and yet another example of why the right struggles to get respect. The idea that Obama is waging class warfare is a great one. I hate it. But it would have more legs if it wasn't couched in an elitist view of conservatives thumbing their nose in disgust at anyone in the lower class. In this case, I don't give a shit what these people spend their money on.

Nor do I, however this nonsense "elitist" bullshit attached to the right is laughable. I wonder how the ads would have played out if Kerry was running against Obama. Both parties are filled with elitists. One party has marketed itself to the simpleminded as the poor guys fighting the rich guys. The level of credulity it takes to buy into either party great. To buy into the bullshit the left is pumping out takes total gullibility~

Here is the kicker though, The haves are really providing for the have nots... The have nots are just costing them money.

Kinda like your daughter hooks up with a punk that raids the fridge and drinks your beer then acts like he is entitled to it.

I seriously think the ones that pay the taxes should be the only ones who decide how the taxes are spent but that's just me.

I disagree with much of the left platform. You're not going to get argument from me on that.

Again, it's one thing to want to reduce government spending on lower class benefits. It's another thing to couch that in disgust for people who are reliant on government. That is elitism and one you don't see from the left because they are at least smart enough to know what a dent that puts on their reputation. The right is fighting an image of being out of touch and unsympathetic to the lower class and accusatory to the point of practically showing disgust. That doesn't help the party's reputation one bit.

The right is simply not as effective at marketing. The left plays to the left hip and cons the simpleminded into believing they are regular guys fighting the evil rich. They are Al Sharpton with big money and media backing. They feed on the poor and need them to stay poor while selling the scam they are on their side~

This isn't about taxes. This is about making a big deal out of how people spend their money, even if some of that was given to them by the government.

And by the way, let's be careful about using the word "entitled." Not every person on welfare acts entitled to it. Many people legitimately need it, and not every person is an abuser of the system.
