Do you favor universal background checks?

Ninety-two percent of Americans favor background checks for all potential gun buyers, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll.

Universal background checks are one of the proposals that President Obama has called on Congress to pass as part of his proposal to combat gun violence in the wake of the massacre in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school in December.

Licensed gun dealers already must run background checks, but unlicensed dealers and private sellers, many of whom sell guns at gun shows or over the internet, are not required to do so.

Support for universal background checks went across party lines:
89 percent of Republicans
93 percent of Democrats and Independents were in favor
93 percent of gun households
85 percent of those living in a household with a member of the National Rifle Association

Enforcement is always a problem with anything. There's no law where someone couldn't say, "Well, the criminals aren't going to follow it." Doesn't mean we don't have laws. Although that idea sounds appealing to the fringe, it is not a reasonable stance for people who want to live in a civilized society.

Most all of what is being offered now is pointless. It helps gutless sheep feel better about themselves and the shitbags they think care about them gain power. I was talking to a guy I buy ammunition from and he told me about buying a gun in California. He said he had to wait 21 days or some crazy shit and had to pay a storage fee until he was able to pick up the gun. I have no idea if it is true, but his point was the same as yours. He had a gun safe full of guns but had to go through a cooling off period to get his gun

Sounds like you are suggesting just having no laws since any law and enforcement of it could be abused. The founding fathers had laws. Until there's no mre bad people, laws are going to be part of living in a society.

Yes, except for transferring within family, and steps are taken to make sure the process is fast and not too onerous for individuals making sales. If this passes the House I feel like there will be effort made for the second part to be true.

So whats your plan, do nothing? sure, previously law abiding people sometimes go off the rails, but i bet its at a far lower rate than people with shady histories due to crime or mental illness.

Yeah not sure why the dude had to wait 21 days. Was it a private sale through an FFL? If so he should find another FFL. Californa has a 10 day waiting period and I have never heard of a licenced dealer pulling something like that.

If we did not have a government that gives us good reason to not trust them this would be a different conversation. To your point until there are no more bad people I want the right to keep every gun I have. We have all the gun restrictions we need. I like millions of gun owners have done nothing to justify giving any of our magazines or guns up~

Every right has infringement. Just saying its infringement so it can't be allowed is really a difficult position to defend.
