One reason, the United States hasn't gotten away with what some countries do that are worse, is because of the U.S. Constitution. Not that it's always followed mind you, but it does help. Things are getting worse, the more it is usurped though.

China is not a country based on property rights. So cheating is the name of the game.

I have a list of countries from an Austrian Economics book for just high schoolers, and it discusses the kind of laws some countries have that make them riskier for doing business. I'd have to check it but I think it was referring to how much natural law a place has. Some places are a mix.

Yeah, I just looked it up. It was a chapter titled Natural Law and Economic Prosperity. This gets compared to Civil/Roman Law ( dominant through most history) Much of the world moved in the direction toward Natural Law since the Magna Carta up to the Great Depression. After 1776, America was the leader of this trend. Such countries are the most prosperous, have the largest middle-classes and investment opportunities. But things have moved in the direction of Civil/Roman law since. This would include positivist laws. ( many of our lawyers). There's also colonial law, English common law, Islamic law, Jewish law, Christian law and few other types mixed in. The ones with the least amount of natural law are the riskiest. More corruption follows too.

China in the same chapter is described as having law that is "chaotic." Socialist. Some local customary law. Not influenced by Natural Law. Towns even have own legal system. This is © 2004. So if any changes I am not aware of them or where or how much.

I'd put Adams County, Colorado, up against any of the most corrupt countries of the world. That place gives corruption a bad name.

The whole country? I think not. Power corrupts, but in other countries there's less social pressure to behave ethically.

I don't think I could ever live in a middle eastern country just because of the shopping. Everything you buy is priced three times too high and you have to offer one-ninth of that and then you both waste time haggling toward a result in the middle that you both know going in. Until they fix that part of the culture, everything they do is going to be less efficient than it is in America or other civilized countries.

That’s why, when I was stationed in El Paso, I got tired of going to Mexico. When you have to barter with the “Chiclets Kids” over the price of gum it’s gone too far.
