Beloved: A Chiefs Offseason Tournament. Your Favorite Chief

TimBone suggested a while back that I do a "Favorite Chief" tournament, and I thought it sounded like a good idea. So here goes.

The Goal:

This is about your FAVORITE players. Not the best players, but your favorite. You can take into account all factors, such as on-field performance, off-field personality, source of favorite plays, whatever. This is all about players who made you smile, who you were really glad to have as Chiefs.

I realize that this will penalize players from earlier eras, since fewer people will have seen players as we move back in time. There's nothing we can do about that, so ... sorry, older players.

The Rules:

I have developed a database of every player who has been a Chief for at least three seasons. If your favorite player was a Chief for two years or less, you're out of luck.

I will present the tournament as a number of sub-tournaments by position group, for the positions of: RB, QB, receivers, OL, DB, LB, DL, and ST (excluding returners). Generally, we will present between 12 and 20 players in each heat, and will pick the top three.

In the sub-tournaments, we will pick the top three favorite players from each position group, and they will go into the final tournament to select the overall favorite Chief ever.

Got it? We'll start with the defensive backs. There will be 4 heats of defensive backs.

Remember, this isn't the BEST players. These are the players you most liked to have as Chiefs.

Um so DT wins in a landslide. Seems like a lot of work for a known outcome.

Or are we doing every position? Reading comprehension is lacking here.

We'll pick the three favorites at each position group, then narrow those down to the favorite player ever.

We'll see who wins. I can see several players making a run at the title.

Okay, my favorite three players from this list:

#1 - Deron Cherry. Deron showed up my senior year of high school and played for the next decade. He instilled in me my love of the free safety position, and particularly the center field ball hawk philosophy. Cherry played the ball better than perhaps any safety in NFL history, and was the epitome of grace. He was the leader of the best defensive backfield in NFL history. Loved that guy. He's a contender for my favorite player ever.

#2 - Brandon Flowers. I gotta say, I appreciate sure tackling, and Brandon Flowers is one of the best pure tacklers I've ever seen. Sure, he got burned on some deep balls, but man, he could really support the run.

#3 - Gary Green. I always tout Gary Green around here, partly because he's so criminally underrated. He was a pro bowler when the Chiefs were terrible, and I really liked him because he was such a bright spot. He was a great cover guy and well-rounded player.

I remember him and Johnny Robinson from my earliest days as a Chiefs fan. I want to pick them, but I just can't remember them well enough.

Deron Cherry had better get out of this round. I have few better memories than watching Cherry prowl the deep center of the field.
