Media Quiet About San Antonio Theater Shooting

On Sunday December 17, 2012, 2 days after the CT shooting, a man went to a restaurant in San Antonio to kill his X-girlfriend. After he shot her, most of the people in the restaurant fled next door to a theater. The gunman followed them and entered the theater so he could shoot more people. He started shooting and people in the theater started running and screaming. It’s like the Aurora, CO theater story plus a restaurant!

Now aren’t you wondering why this isn’t a lead story in the national media along with the school shooting?

There was an off duty county deputy at the theater. SHE pulled out her gun and shot the man 4 times before he had a chance to kill anyone. So since this story makes the point that the best thing to stop a bad person with a gun is a good person with a gun, the media is treating it like it never happened.

Only the local media covered it. The city is giving her a medal next week. Just thought you’d like to know.

And your study is either bogus or you are mischaracterizing it. Plenty of people have pointed out recent situations where an armed CIVILIAN stopped shooters. The incidents weren't reported on MSNBC so I doubt you would know about them.

I would just add a few comments to all the postings.

I have no problem with requiring further training of CCW holders however before that can happen the CCW laws need to become more equal across state lines.

By that I mean every State should become "Shall Issue" to those who are not prohibited persons. Right now you have people getting Utah and Florida CCW Non Resident permits because they can't get them in their home state. In California if you live in a favorable county you can get a permit. If you live in LA, San Diego, Orange, San Francisco Counties your pretty well screwed unless you have been a victim of a violent crime. It comes down to a Sherriffs discretion whether or not they want to issue.

I will also add that just because a cop goes through all that "training" doesn't really mean squat. I know several cops and I shoot way more than most of them. It is not unheard of for cops to only shoot when they're maintaining there qual. And thats at a static target.

With the terrible economy and the forces struggling with budgets their practice time and ammo are some of the first things that get cut.

Not sure if this is the same guy but I saw where a CCW Holder drew a bead on the shooter then noticed movement behind the shooter, so CCW holder held his shot. The CCW holder did everything right.

This is a double homicide. Tragic, but not nearly as newsworthy as someone shooting kids in an elementary school. I imagine that 99% of all San Antonio homicides never get reported by the national media.

While this may be true.. how many MORE people would have been shot had the shooter not been taken down? What if the shooter in Aurora got off only a couple of shots before he was taken down by someone? What if the same happened at Sandy Hook?

I agree that the media is always going to devote much more coverage to the times when the worst happens... but the problem is that they almost completely ignore incidents like these.

Yes, there weren't buckets of blood for the gun-haters to bathe in. Darn.

Perhaps the main reason the media hates conceal carry is that it's bad for their ratings.

Virtually all of them are reported locally. A fraction of these things have been reported in the national media, period. Most of them reported were ones in which the gunman was not stopped, because that's because most of them end up that way.

Gunmen who have been stopped by another armed individual have been reported in the national media.

Two months ago, an Alaska State Trooper shot a potentially dangerous man right outside of Anchorage. I imagine this didn't make national news either, I don't remember checking.

Personally, I think you are correct and that heroic acts go under publicized. However, I think they don't make national syndicates because with the sheer amount of homicides that occur in this country, it isn't newsworthy outside of it's local arena. Under reported, sure - under reported because of anti-gun agenda is what I am disagreeing with.

On August 5, a police officer killed an armed gunman at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. This was widely reported and far from shoved under the rug.
