(CNN) – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

This shooter reloaded several times. We will never, ever support extremely small 5 or 6-round magazines. It is very easy, and very quick to reload, takes 2 or 3 seconds.

Cutting magazine size modestly wont really do much, at all.

I actually agree with contracting with the local PD. It makes everything easier, and I think local communities would accept it more easily if it was a cop.

I'm just arguing against the idea that an armed guard who is not a peace officer would be basically useless, especially given the many shootings stopped or prevented by private citizens with a concealed weapon.

Nobody has addressed that question? This guy appears to be either willfully ignorant or a liar. I work in schools in pretty bad neighborhoods that have effectively addressed this question and have actively communicated their results. They have no problems in areas with gangs and guns. I'm curious why this clown hasn't done his homework.

Pretty much, yes. I knew there was not a chance in hell they would propose any form of gun control, because if they did, the leadership would have been removed within a year.

I figured they would advocate for more mental health spending AND for guards at school, but they decided to talk only about guards.

How do people that hate guns, don't own guns, are never around guns know so much about replacing "clips" (for you HCF), time it takes, the dangers involved, etc.


It would be like me watching a show about building a bridge, than arguing with a bridge engineer how to build it correctly.

I know its a cute phrase that you think might help support your argument, but calling armed guards "mall cops" is just flat-out silly.

As the NRA noted, we have armed guards at banks, some office buildings, courts, every federal building, and even sports stadiums.

Why are we wasting our money on those "mall cops"?

Most people's problem with this proposal comes from one or both of these:

1) "The NRA proposed it, and it was not gun control."

2) "If we do this, congress will very likely say 'good enough' and not implement any form of gun control, but I got my hopes up for pointless gun control laws that I supported for years, and to see them fail when I think we might be close is just unacceptable."

Let's see:

1. banks and office buildings are privately owned. The resources come from private enterprises who have independently determined that they want to have security for various reasons, but mostly because given the rents charged, their tenants expect it.

2. Sports stadiums -- same.

3. Federal buildings. Not every federal building has armed guards. Don't usually see one in a post office, for example. Certain courts, etc. Of course, there's really obvious reasons for that -- they are places where bad guys would love to interfere with the administration of justice.

Note also that the above are potentially very high value targets for terrorists, both domestic and foreign.

Schoolyards, well, not so much. There are also 100,000 public schools (estimated), which is far more than federal buildings with security details.

And those places also don't have the schoolyard issue (for elementary schools) of literally hundreds of adults coming through every day to pickup/dropoff kids, making security a complete nightmare in terms of implementing real security procedures.
