Your verifiable fact was unrelated to any context. I took the implication that post to mean that an increase in taxpayer dollars going to mental health initiatives would necessarily mean an increase of conditions that you see as having led to exacerbating problems in troubled individuals.

I think that implication is a strawman, because 1.) no one wants that, and 2.) I don't think that's the only possible outcome of trying to improve mental healthcare.

This is what will happen. Debate will rage for months, possibly years, and in the end, they'll come to some solution of "banning" the accessories that easily make semi-auto weapons fully auto. But as for the guns themselves, nothing will be "permabanned".

Why you ask? It's simple - money. Specifically, all the money gun producers pump into our economy. Nobody in Washington wants to **** with that.

I think it's going to get shelved anyway. 2013 has already been set as the year Congress wants to resolve the fiscal crisis while tackling comprehensive immigration reform.

A few Democrats are going to nobly push for gun control, it will get tabled and go nowhere in the House, a lot of people like myself will cry foul, and nothing will change.

If anything, this will just put the brakes on further gun rights expansion for the next six months.

I'd say that is an inappropriate, cynical thing to do. And that's just what a reinstatement of the '94 'assault weapons' ban would be.

The issue doesn't have to be narrowed to that extent. The issue she's addressing is gun violence.

One way to reduce gun violence is through an assault weapons ban.

How would that work? The use of the term 'assault weapons' is a purely rhetorical term that comes from gun policy discussion. The '94 ban didn't ban any guns, it just banned add-on features (such as foldable stocks, pistol grips, bayonnettes, etc).

Even if I asked you to tell me what an assault weapon even is, you would either have to give me that definition as set forth in the '94 legislation, or you would have to give me an opinion -- a subjective definition made based on your own perception of limits of reasonable force. And each person's subjective definition is going to be different.

So how is an 'assault weapons' ban going to help protect anyone?

And as I said, assault weapons had nothing to do with the violence in Newport. Therefore, she is standing on the bodies of dead children to forward an agenda unrelated.
