Electronics Google Voice- porting landline

Has anyone here ported their landline to google voice yet? If so, what service were you using and what process did you use?

I've found a few topics on it but would like to hear from people that have actually done it before I try.

I'm a big GV user, but I just did it with my Sprint cell phone, so I can't say much about the landline process.

I've seen a couple documents of people porting their landline to a Gophone and then to google voice.

What sucks is that you purchase a prepaid phone and minutes then both become useless after the port.

I just want some confirmation that people have successfully done it before I try since our landline number is our main contact number.

So I take it you're not able to just do it directly? Seems like they should fix that.

Nope, you can only port a cell phone number at this time. Hence the extra steps.

I was all ready to port my home number to Google Voice, then I found Ooma. Seemed like much less hassle, a little more reliable, and I'm only paying $3 and some change per month for home phone service.

Well, going to go for it with my current gophone. Transfered most of my funds balance to my wifes gophone so I won't have to lose too much money on it. Hopefully, I don't have any problems porting from my gophone to google voice. Then I will just reregister my gophone for a new number.

Keep me posted on how it goes. My parents are debating giving up their landline (through Vonage), but they've had the same number for longer than I've been alive and want to keep it. I mentioned Google Voice, but didn't realize how much of a pain in the ass it would be to do it.

Starting the port to my gophone was completely painless. Should be done in about 3 days. Then I can look into porting to google voice.

so, to this point, it has been easier than the article makes it sound.

I am starting to look into phone services for my parents. They have a landline and pay way too much to keep it. They aren't the most tech savvy, and I may not be able to help them set it up. What would you guys recommend for them? They use the landline quite a bit.

you can go the google voice route I am taking by using the links above OR you can just get the Obihai 100 from amazon and get an account at callcentric.com for $7 per month.

the difference being, google voice has no minutes limits while callcentric only gives you 500 minutes.
