Gun Control

We have all heard about what happened in Aurora, Co, and I think that Gun Control is going to be a huge topic in the following months.

What measures need to be taken? Do you have any ideas that will help prevent this kind of thing from happening again as it pertains to guns?

Summary of 2013 legislation

Following is a summary of the 2013 legislation:

Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:
- 120 specifically-named firearms
- Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one military characteristic
- Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds

Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:
- Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test
- Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test
- Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans
- Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.

Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:
- Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment
- Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes and
- Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons

Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
- Background check of owner and any transferee;
- Type and serial number of the firearm;
- Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;
- Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and
- Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration
This whole thing pisses me off, but the last part really gets under my skin.

Gun owners will have to go through another background check, register their grandfathered weapons, have our picture taken, give fingerprints, and get a permit from law enforcement. The LWNJ's are treating us like a bunch of sex offenders with this proposed registration BS.

Next thing you know, we will be put on a "no gun buy" list, and then a domestic terrorist list.

Supreme Court keeps guns away from those guilty of domestic violence

Quote:
The Supreme Court on Wednesday strengthened a federal law that bars anyone convicted of domestic violence from possessing a gun. In a 9-0 decision, the high court said the ban extended to anyone who had pleaded guilty to at least a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence, even in cases in which there was no proof of violent acts or physical injury.

I am not sure how "shall not be infringed" suddenly becomes "shall not be infringed with this list of exceptions"

It was 9-0, so maybe you should brush up on the law because there didn't appear to be much controversy in a 9-0 decision.

There are plenty of exceptions to more than one amendmentt; all we do now is decide where to draw the line, and I have no sympathy for domestic abusers.

The Supreme Court gets cases wrong all the time. Kelo, Wickard, Raich, Kormatsu, Dredd Scott, Scheneck, Plessy, McConnell, Miller vs. California, Bennis vs Michigan, Muehler vs Mena, etc.

Just because 9 people who were appointed by the government approve of what the government is doing means nothing compared to the plain language of the founding document of this country.

In the state of Nubs. If you have any misdemeanor convictions involving a female, your right to own a handgun in this state is gone. long guns are allowed tell it becomes a felony

OK, BEP.

Nine people of very different ideologies agreed on this. All 9 are idiots on this, huh? "Plain language" is often hardly plain, especially when written 220+ years ago.
