Gun Control

We have all heard about what happened in Aurora, Co, and I think that Gun Control is going to be a huge topic in the following months.


What measures need to be taken? Do you have any ideas that will help prevent this kind of thing from happening again as it pertains to guns?

Sure it does. Your point was that a waiting period or background check would affect you. However, it really doesn't because there is no waiting period. It is afterall, an instant process.

Anyways, this is all pointless. My fiance just woke up (works overnight as a nurse) so I am not going to spend anymore time on what is obviously an issue we have to agree to disagree on. And as long as you aren't a criminal, that is just fine with me.

That study is very telling. Coming in at nearly 40% each were sales from a.) friends and family, and b.) the street.

Nearly 80% of guns purchased by criminals were purchased in settings that cannot be regulated or controlled.

Think about how many people are killed by cars. Or falling out of bed. Or tripping on stairs. We should get rid of cars, beds and stairs to keep that from happening.

The ONLY gun control I will support is training and education requirements. I have no problem with requiring drivers ed and a test to get a license to drive... I see no reason why this shouldn't be applied to guns as well. Of course, this is already the case here in Texas with concealed carry requirements.

Ugh, I was trying to leave the discussion. But this is a good point as well that I am sure most gun people wouldn't argue with either. Oh but wait, it restricts them.

Makes sense.

You have to take a hunters safety course before you can get a hunting license. I don't think it would be an overwhelming imposition to require a gun safety course before you qualify to purchase a gun.

Doesn't really impact this situation.

I'm saying that what you're proposing wouldn't even affect 1% of violent offenders who use guns to break the law.

I know. I guess we just differ on whether such legislation would be worth it.

When the Constitution was written, it would have taken half a day to shoot 50 people. I can't imagine the people writing that document ever imagined the impact it would have on the future.

All that being said, this is the price we pay for technological advancement. Everything becomes more efficient, even killing.

I don't subscribe to the notion that if everyone was carrying guns, the world would be a safer place. There's a reason the wild west was wild, and it wasn't just injuns gassed up on firewater. People are stupid and make bad decisions. Increasing the amount of those people that carry guns won't make the world a better place.

It's not all crystal clear for me. I support the right to own guns. I own guns. But I can't help but examine those beliefs when you recognize the amount of firepower any person has within reach these days, and see the harm that can be done.
