School Pulls White Boy out of class for "Blackface" MLK costume

A white Colorado second-grade student who wore black face paint as part of a Martin Luther King costume has drawn criticism from school officials.

Sean King was pulled out of class Wednesday for the costume, which was for a project requiring dressing up as a historical figure.

The Colorado Springs boy says he was trying to honor the slain civil rights leader. His parents knew about his costume and came to watch the presentations.

Blackface was common in minstrel shows in the 19th century and featured white performers playing stereotyped black characters.

Steve Klein of The King Center in Atlanta tells KRDO-TV ( http://bit.ly/KqIxqM ) the youth apparently had good intentions.

But he says Sean and his family need to understand some people are still offended by white people wearing black face.

Ok, so personal example.

My non black ancestors were savaged by whites. They were a peaceful people called Taino Indians. The white people came and enslaved, tortured, raped, and shipped them back across vast oceans as slaves and oddities. Sound familiar?

The only difference is that my ancestors ceased to exist because of them. The history of an entire people wiped out because of greedy ass white people. All that is left of them is mixes with slaves from Africa and mixes with the conquering Spanish which were largely by rape. To add insult to injury, in 1898, the US comes and invades an independent nation and seizes control of the island. There was a lot of discontent and death after that as many different groups fought for independence. Eventually the fight changed from independence to rights.

I'm telling you as someone who has some ground to say stuff like this... it is time to let it go and focus on the future. You can't go back and change anything so why focus so much energy into the anger, hate, and mistrust? Accept people as individuals and judge them on their own merits... not because of their skin color. I would wager that a large majority of people that you have had misgivings for are white people descended from late immigrants who had nothing to do with any of this.

Fair enough. However, the non-aggrieved party has no right to tell others what or what not to be outraged about. That's all I'm saying. Hopefully the kid's parents have learned their lesson.

I'm going to say this for I don't know how many times, and I'll leave this thread alone for good: He should portray another historic figue that looks more like his race and leave the MLK impersonation to black kids. The same goes for black kids trying to portray a white figure. It's a shame his parents used him like this, he is too young to have an intent to offend anyone, if anything the parents used his innocence to offend black people.

Which leads me to a simple question. Why are you outraged by a white child portraying a black leader who's beliefs you don't follow?
