Should lottery winners be public information?

This picture, which "shows" the winners of the big lottery, really bothered me.

As you'll recall, some McDonald's employee claimed she won it, sparking a dispute since she was part of a lottery pool. Then she backs off and three anonymous winners claim the prize.

If I'm one of the McDonald's people, I'm going to be very concerned about this anonymous claim. How do we know it's not the sister of the McDonald's woman? Or even the McDonald's woman herself? Do the McDonald's people need to hire an attorney to sue to get the names of the winners, and then take the risk that they really are different people?

It makes me realize that this is, in essence, a large payout of government money. The government takes in the payments, peels off the house share, and then gives it back out. This isn't a national security issue, so why is it not public information about who the money is being given to?

Once I saw the picture, I also had more sinister thoughts. Really, how do we know that these people aren't relatives of the lottery director? What if all of the employees work together print up an extra ticket at the end, and split the money? Whle I think it would be hard to pull off, and while I think that most government employees are honest, I've seen how Adams County, Colorado, works, so I'm wary of corruption.

If you think the hassles of winning a large lottery are great, then don't buy a ticket. If you want the money, you should have to be public so we can all see who the money is really going to.

In Kansas, you have that right. Some states you can't.

If I won eleventy-seventeen gazillion dollars, I would prefer to keep it as hush hush as possible.

They're not public funds. They're private funds. The public funds are the ones that do not go into the drawing.

I voted "I don't care. I really, honestly don't care." Yet I cared enough to vote so that is kind of self contradiction. Now I am commenting on it so I am REALLY contradicting my vote.

I don't see it as public funds because it is not a tax. It is truely more like gambling. Just because I win a jackpot in Vegas doesn't mean that I should have my identity devulged to those who lost.

I like this option.

In fact, it seems like there's one state that does something like that. Only it's not charity, they just keep a bigger part of it. I like the charity option better.

It seems like I'm in the minority on the public information front. Maybe I'm just jaded.

I voted no. I'll preface by saying I never play the lottery but if I did, the last thing I would want is every last charitable cause and long lost relatives that didn't give a shit about me previously contacting me for donations.

People would call that The Christian advantage. You were gonna give that to them anyways, if you're a good Christian.

This. It wouldn't take long for some market research guru to create a program that could scrape those names and then sell that info off to the highest bidder.

What would a prospect list of 100 "suddenly multimillionaires" go for nowadays?

Why? It is my choice. They wouldn't have a problem if I gave to the Salvation Army now would they? Charity is charity.

Believe it or not, my church does a lot for the homeless and less fortunate in our city.

It should be the winner's choice, if they want their fame, go for it. If they want it private, it should be.
