Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

He is Beric Dondarrion. In the first season he was the guy that Eddard Stark ordered to go out and bring The Mountain to justice after hearing he was out razing the countryside. You literally only see him for one scene in the first season, and he was recast for this season. It's all been said in this season but it's hard for it to sink in, but he and his troop are essentially still allied to King Robert and refuse to kneel to anyone as they consider them all to be false kings. They are The Brothers Without Banners.

When one combines this with the fact that he also saved Tyrion on the battlefield, I can't help but think he has been placed there. Possible by Varys? He knew of the assassination attempt?
The pod thing continuing into this ep was a gag, IMO. He's prominent in the books, but his worth in bed is not.

I dunno, seemed like non-readers were speculating more than book readers were spoiling, but I didn't go back through it. I usually call out people who post spoilers on this thread, which doesn't happen often. I didn't say anything last week though because I figured saying the speculation was a spoiler would be more of a spoiler because it would confirm the speculation.

Is your complaint that the book readers are saying too much of what happened in the books vs what happened in the show? Cause I could see that.

About the only thing I see that could be somewhat spoiler-ish was Berric Dondarian's backstory. And that's only if they bother extrapolating any more in the show. I don't see any future events here.

Yes. The "she knows the language already bit" was ruined on here long ago under the just providing info from the books to help you all out excuse. Among other things. I don't understand why it's so hard to just not talk in here. Human nature I suppose.

Meh, I guessed that she knew the language just by the way she subtly reacted in the first episode there.

I like this show, but I find it very difficult to follow, not having read the books.

I know you weren't calling me out here, but just want to defend what I posted FTR. I only said what has been revealed in the show itself and wanted to help Fire Me Boy in what he misheard. I take care to not say things in this thread that will reveal things to come.

I like reading what people think is going to happen as nonreaders and just want to help when I see someone misread what's explicit.

All that said, if anyone didn't catch it, Thoros follows The Red God

Here's one thing I don't get over the first three seasons. Tywin's a smart guy. He's always seemingly a step ahead of everyone else on the battlefield and in the politics on the show. But he doesn't seem to know that his own son and daughter have an incestuous relationship and produced three children from it (pretty much everyone else in King's Landing knows as much and have for a long time including Tyrion, Varys, Littlefinger, etc.). Does he really not know? Or does he know and is just in denial about that and won't ever bring it up to them out of the shame of it? I would guess the latter. Perhaps he thinks it reflects on him being some kind of failure of a father to them.

Really? I got the feeling from the last episode with Cersi and Tywin that he does know and is barely able to hide his contempt. Its like the father in denial - as long as no one speaks about it, it hasn't really happened, but it colors every other criticism he has for either one of them.

He knows - there's no way he doesn't. Probably doesn't really mind the idea of pure-blood Lannisters all that much, either. But obviously he won't discuss it.
