Doctor Who

Been meaning to start a thread on this for years and never have for some reason. Big fan of both the original (what I've seen/remember of it...) and the rebooted series.

New doctor:

So they're rewriting...ugh. After dozens of times they set something, they can just change it on a whim?

Speaking of rewriting, a new Doctor Who movie is being made by the Harry Potter people, supposedly a reboot. Stop rebooting my favorite shows.

I read somewhere that they have to make the movie separate from the TV show, something about law over there regarding the BBC.

Speaking of rewriting, a new Doctor Who movie is being made by the Harry Potter people, supposedly a reboot. Stop rebooting my favorite shows.

Cult BBC TV show Doctor Who is set to be made into a Hollywood movie, a leading director has said.

David Yates, who directed the last four Harry Potter films, told Variety magazine he is working on developing a feature film with the BBC.

He said the film would take a fresh approach to the show, which first appeared on TV in 1963.

Yates said it would take "two to three years to get it right" as the show needs "quite a radical transformation".

"Russell T Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch," he said.

Yates is reported to be working with the head of LA-based BBC Worldwide Productions, Jane Tranter.

A BBC spokesman said: "A Doctor Who feature film remains in development with BBC Worldwide Productions in Los Angeles.

"The project is unlikely to reach cinemas for several years and as yet there is no script, cast or production crew in place."

Doctor Who began in 1963, and seven actors played the Doctor before the show was dropped in 1989.

After a TV movie in 1996 - starring Paul McGann - the TV series returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. David Tennant took over in the same year.

The sixth series of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor, was broadcast on BBC One earlier this year.

They tried to Americanize it back in 1996 with that dung of a movie from Fox. Just wondering if the BBC will then start this as a relaunch of the series.

I'm excited about this...it's not everyday that a Harry Potter director offers to make a big-budget Doctor Who movie. It's seems like I'm the only one who's excited, though--the reaction to the news has been amazingly against it.

First trailer for Doctor Who Christmas special: The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe

Simon Brew

The Doctor Who Christmas special has a name. And you can catch the trailer for The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe here...

Published on Nov 18, 2011

"Best. Christmas. Ever."

As promised, as part of the BBC’s Children In Need appeal, we got both the name and a first clip from this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special.

The episode is going to be called The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, tying into the Narnia-esque theme that had previously been hinted at. And here’s the trailer for it.

Please support the Children In Need appeal, too. You can find full details of how to donate here.

Want to know what to expect from this year’s Christmas special of Doctor Who – The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe? Then click this way…

Last week, the title of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special for finally unveiled. Entitled The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, the episode features Matt Smith, Claire Skinner, Bill Bailey, Alexander Armstrong and Arabella Weir.

We’ve got hold of some new official shots from the Christmas special now, too, which you can see here (click on the thumbnails to make them bigger). And there’s the official synopsis, too, which reads thus:

It’s Christmas Eve, 1938, when Madge Arwell comes to the aid of an injured Spaceman Angel as she cycles home, in this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith as the Doctor.

He promises to repay her kindness – all she has to do is make a wish.

Three years later, a devastated Madge escapes war-torn London with her two children for a dilapidated house in Dorset. She is crippled with grief at the news her husband has been lost over the channel, but determined to give Lily and Cyril the best Christmas ever.

The Arwells are surprised to be greeted by a madcap caretaker whose mysterious Christmas gift leads them into a magical wintry world. Here, Madge will learn how to be braver than she ever thought possible. And that wishes can come true…

We’ll have more news on The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe as we get it…

'Doctor Who' Moves From Spring To Fall
Steven Moffat cites creative issues, but they could actually be financial

Production hasn't yet started on the next season of "Doctor Who," although it should have by now to prepare for a spring season.

But showrunner Steven Moffat has finally confirmed why such work hasn't started yet: There won't be a spring season.

The third season of "Doctor Who" featuring Matt Smith has been officially bumped to fall, Moffat recently told the official Doctor Who Magazine. No reason was given, but such a move -- or a more worst case scenario, that there wouldn't be a Season 7 -- had been speculated now for weeks.

"For me, as a kid, when the afternoon got darker and there was a thrill of cold in the air, I knew that even though summer was over, the Tardis was coming back," Moffat told the magazine. "So yes, that's part of the plan, that's part of the reason for this little delay. But it's not the whole story."

Apparently, it was either that, or bring "Doctor Who" in as a summer series. Using his colorful storytelling abilities, Moffat cryptically explained why that wouldn't be happening.

"All that running down tunnels, with torches, and the sunlight streaming through your windows and bleaching out the screen?" he said. "All those barbecues and children playing outside, while on the [television] there are green monsters seething in their CGI-enhanced lairs? It's just not right, is it? Be honest."

Moffat made references to classic "Doctor Who," which was typically aired in the fall and winter by BBC. It wasn't really until the new series debuted in 2005 that it became more of a spring program.

Yet, the fall debut pushes past theories that BBC would split the seventh season over two years. BBC renewed "Doctor Who" for 14 episodes last June, but shied away from discussing reports of a split, saying only that the Season 6 split was more for storytelling reasons than anything else.

While Moffat might be citing a bit of history in terms of "Doctor Who," it seems the real reasons behind the move is more financial.

The move would certainly disrupt the flow BBC has had over the years with "Doctor Who" since its relaunch. Airing episodes in spring would allow anticipation to build for the annual Christmas episode. The Christmas episode would then serve as a launching platform to whet the appetite of fans for the next season, which would then debut the following spring.

With a fall debut, that would almost place the Christmas episode right up against the actual season. Unless there is a split in the season, the entire season would be found in just the span of a few months. If there is a split, however, that would put the Christmas episode in a precarious position, since it would likely be placed right in the middle of a season. How would BBC handle that? Make it a standalone episode outside the continuity -- like what "Warehouse 13" and "Haven" do on Syfy -- or make it a key episode in the season, like what happened when star David Tennant left.

About why fans have to wait? Moffat is keeping the blame squarely on the creative side.

"We needed a little more time to prepare for everything we've got planned," he said. "That, above all, is why we needed this little gap.

"Just be a tiny bit patient, and trust me, we'll make it up to you. For full and comprehensive details of the spectacle to come, consult your fondest memories in a couple of years time."

This year's Christmas episode is scheduled to air Dec. 25 on BBC.

I think you'd only find interest in doctors 5-8 in coming back. I doubt they put together more than 3 to come back.

The only one that would come back is the 5th. The others aren't interested. The 7th is shooting the Hobbit.

I think Davidson got a raw deal following up Tom Baker. He left the role all too soon. Colin Baker was fired but I think those involved in that have all left the show. He has done quite a bit of Who on the radio and other sources. I'm sure that the Hobbit will finish shooting by then. I really liked Sylvester McCoy's version. I've heard McCann has done quite a bit of radio stuff as well. I haven't really seen him in anything besides except Luther. The direction they would have taken the Doctor if they followed up that movie would have been pretty much a total reboot. I don't think the new Dr. Who is really a reboot. They have made the doctor a bit more menacing and powerful and came up with the Time War that killed off the rest of the Time Lords. I don't care if Eccleston comes back at all. He was a rent a Doctor.

Steven Moffat clarifies Doctor Who movie position

Simon Brew

Steven Moffat has cleared up some of the confusion surrounding the Doctor Who movie on his Twitter feed. Here's what he's been saying...

Published on Dec 2, 2011

Following yesterday’s story as director David Yates gave a brief update on the position of the Doctor Who movie (summation: pretty much in the same place it was a few weeks ago), Steven Moffat has clarified one or two things on Twitter.

Firstly, he pointed out the position that David Yates was in when quoted on the movie. He Tweeted: “Movie thing: David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet. You've seen the rubbish I talk when I'm cornered.”

Most importantly, though, he wrote the following:

“To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.”

And that, we’d suggest, is very good news. We'll say again: we don't think we'll hear much of substance on the project for some time yet. But it's encouraging that it won't be, as feared, entirely independent of the TV show.
