Highlander to be remade...

....and the Twilight screenwriter is scripting.

Seriously.

Jesus ****ing christ.
Quote:
'Twilight' Writer Melissa Rosenberg Takes Over Summit's 'Highlander' Script (Exclusive)

Neal Moritz and Peter Davis are producing the remake of the 1986 action fantasy that starred Sean Connery.

7:12 PM 2/9/2011 by Borys Kit

After taking on vampires in Summit’s Twilight Saga, writer Melissa Rosenberg is tackling a different kind of immortal being: Scottish highlanders.

The scribe is in negotiations to come on board to work on the studio's remake of Highlander. Neal Moritz is producing the project, which offers an update on the 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown. Justin Lin (Fast Five) is attached to direct. Peter Davis is also producing.

The original story centered on a Scottish swordsman, who discovers he is part of a secret race of near-immortal beings and faces off against an unstoppable barbarian who covets the power gained from there being only one of their kind left.

Summit acquired remake rights to Highlander from Panzer/Davis Productions, producer of the original film, in 2008. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote the initial draft while Cormac Wibberley and Marianne Sellek Wibberley also worked on the script.

Wth her Twilight connection, Rosenberg may seem an odd choice for writing the action remake. But as the sole writer on Summit’s vampire pentalogy, she has proved adept at handling both character and action, as well as yearning, a key component of Highlander as protagonist Connor MacLeod watches his true love age while he does not. Before tackling Twilight, Rosenberg was a writer/co-executive producer on Dexter, the Showtime series that darkly balances family with bloody carnage.

Rosenberg is managed by UTA and 3 Arts Entertainment. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 opens Nov. 18.

I was listening to a recent Kevin Smith podcast and he said to expect a shitload of remakes and movies with numbers after them in the next few years. Studios want safe bets and those types of movies are almost always profitable.

I don't have a problem with a highlander remake. I think it could be epic with the right approach. I just laughed my ass off at the whole twilight screenwriter thing. If this thing is all emo teen with a 20-something stud lamenting his long lost love, it'll be the worst shit ever. I mean, there's some of that in Highlander, but it's not what the movie's about. It needs to be a big, r-rated adult movie, not a new franchise for tweens.

Im not really opposed too much....I was never a huge fan and the sequels sucked.

But yea, "From the Writer of Twilight" doesnt inspire much confidence.

My initial thought, as well. But on the bright side, she has written for the show, Dexter. May not be as bad as first thought.

A year ago or so Dane made this exact statement in response to my questioning why so many remakes out of Hollywood.

Yep. But that's why a film like Cowboys and Aliens is so appealing to me - It may turn out to be hokie as hell, but at least it's original.

This is a terrible ****ing idea, as no one can top the performances of the original Kurgan, McCleod or Ramirez.

ESPECIALLY Kurgan. You cannot replicate that performance, you cannot top it.

FAIL

We're going to be watching this shit and saying WHERE THE **** IS SEAN CONNERY?

I hope they do a lot of Matrix-like CGI during the fight scenes.

It's not like original was a masterpiece or anything. The show was better than the movie, lol.
