Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

Spent three hours cleaning all the metal inside and out. I than steamed the wood parts and screwed up on the handguard. It left a blueish type strip on the guard. The stock still needs more steam, which I'll do tonight.

This is my first time taking this gun apart and the bolt is causing me trouble. Again, I'll figure it out tonight. I also messed up the trigger pull and I really hope a piece fell out of the trigger assembly. I found a tiny pencil led type piece on the cement that I hope is the problem.

It didn't have near as much grease as I thought it would. Here's how I cleaned it.

Hot Soapy water (dumped all the metal parts in it), scrubbed these parts with a toothbrush, sprayed brake cleaner and a degreaser type substance on it, wiped off and oiled them up.

For the stock and handgaurd, I steamed them, it seemed like nothing was coming off though. But you could tell it was doing its job.
Their is a vid on how to use a pop can tin as a shim to lighten the trigger on the 91/30. I will try & find it

Rock River Arms Elite Operator2. Anyone have any experience with it (or the operator2 line in general)? I love the mid-length gas system though I wish it had quad-rails. Looks like a nice shooting gun and RRA has developed a hell of a name for itself.

Thoughts?
That seems like a pretty good deal. You wouldn't need to upgrade the quad, grip or stock, and it has a built-in front sight. Pick up a rear fold-down sight and some sort of red dot sight and you'll be good to go.

My favorite cheap trigger trick. Is the Mini 14 staple trick. It works like a charm.

Comes with a free rear sight. I'm going to go with the stand-alone sight because I want an eotech reflex sight at some point and this would leave the top rail open w/o a handgrip in the way.

My only concern is that I couldn't mount a gangster grip exactly where I wanted to (it would be pretty far forward with the 1/2 rail). Otherwise it's pretty much perfect.

Bought a Ruger SR1911 this week. Can't wait to shoot it. Anyone out there have one of these? They just came out this month.

I had the gangster grip with the tactical flashlight, mounted forward on the bottom quad at basically the same place you'd have to mount yours. While I found it to be very cool on the internet and it looked great mounted on the rifle, I also found it to be fairly useless for actually firing the rifle. Mine is currently residing in the spare parts drawer.

Cool does not equal functional. I'm not going to be going on any commando raids any time soon, and since I have common-wall neighbors on either side of my condo, a rifle that could kill somebody two units away is not the gun I'll go for as a home defender (unless it's zombie apocalyse time and I don't give a shit about errant rounds). I shoot this gun at the range, and at the range all the cool gizmos just get in the way.

But buying this stuff and farting around with it is a fun part of the process, so knock yourself out. I certainly don't want to discourage you from doing that.

I felt like it was much easier to shoot my gun with the vertical grip. Of course I haven't shot it at the range yet, I was just destroying bricks, an old computer and an old DVD player with it from about 40 yards out on my friend's property. Disintegrated a couple of xbox games too - that was fun. I can see how a vertical grip could be useless when shooting from prone or behind a bench at the range, though.

If you really want a grip, DJ, I would get the grip pod which turns into a bipod with a press of button. The bipod isn't going to be as good as the real deal, but it's a sweet compromise if you ask me.

I might try one of the Magpul angled grips. There's a gun store in the area that specializes in ARs - I'm sure they'll have one mounted on something so I can get the feel of it before buy it.
