Good film, exactly what we expected. The weird mishmash of "coming of age" with scifi/horror is a bit too weird to make it a great film but thanks to the Abrams/Spielberg feel (and two great young leads) it works. Some legitimate "drop your popcorn" jump moments too.

I saw "Cloverfield" but don't remember the backstory. But I wouldn't think so.

No.

Before the trailer premiered last year there was alot of speculation about what the movie was about. One of the theories floated out there was that it was a Cloverfield prequel. But no, its not.

Now this is weird. They told me we have a midnight opening tomorrow (Thursday), which is not unusual. But now I found out that, somehow, they've finagled it so that we open "Super 8" tomorrow but in IMAX only. I'll be running "Super 8" all day tomorrow, and we're STILL doing the midnight show, and they'll be opening it in the 35-mm. side at midnight as well. Weird. Oh, well, one less day of having to watch "Pirates 4" is fine with me.

As Hamlet said in "MacBeth", "Pirates 4" is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. I couldn't even focus my interest on it the first time through. Frenetic action scenes, Depp doing his usual "drunk gay Keith Richards" impersonation, and about a half-hour longer than it should've been. ("Super 8" clocks in at a lean 113 minutes. Learn, people. You can tell a story in under 2 hours.) Much like "Hangover 2", another pointless sequel, enough sheep are flocking in that I'm sure there'll be yet another "Pirates" film forthcoming. Joy.

Super 8 is running some kind of IMAX preview nationwide, I believe I read somewhere or another today. I don't remember the specifics.

Yea, i think the series has run its course. I watched the first three flicks a week or two ago.

1st one is a classic
2nd one was better than i remember...pretty decent
3rd one, is just ok.....worst of the trilogy IMO.

They are all bloated and run about 20 minutes too long.


Ive read that Super 8 isnt "tracking" with the general public all that well for whatever reason. Mostly with people over 30 for obvious reasons since we remember the films that its trying to imitate.

Or that we've become so conditioned to watching sequels of some sort or another that we have no idea what to think when an original movie comes down the pipe.

That's apparently the impetus for the preview, although I'm not sure I understand the logic.

Im the biggest pirates fan on this board and i knew it was just a cashgrab. It was my least favorite of the series, even though i went into the theatre knowing i was about to be let down.

Its not terrible, but to me it didnt feel like a continuation of the story. Ill still buy it.
