So, Is This Over-The-Top or Acceptable Satire?
I just saw the story on CNN...
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/...ong/index.html But here's the video. Seems like a pretty pathetic effort to me...I suspect the only people who would really find it funny, are probably pretty racist types. Is it over-the-top, or not? What say you? |

I think it's over-the-top, just as it was with the LA Times.

I'll vote over the top, but I find myself not really caring enough to be offended by it.

It's completely acceptable and isn't racist in the least. Racists may find it funny, but people who appreciate satire and recognize where this comes from and who/what is being satirized can find it funny too. If this were from a skit on SNL, no one but the most uptight would blink an eye.

That's part of what I'm asking....I find it really lame, and pretty much over-the-top IMHO. However, there was a thread back in November, where we were asked about the Palin and the incest thing....and some seemed to think it was no big deal. Just wonderin' whether those folks who thought THAT was no big deal, think this is no big deal too. I'm dubious they'll post here about it, though... ![]()

I have no clue about the Palin and incest thing? But that sounds ****ing retarded.
I don't know if the choice "over the top or acceptable" is a good choice, since I don't think they're mutually exclusive. I just think this is ****ing retarded. |

If those are your only two options, I'd say you have to go with effective satire if for no other reason than the fact that effective satire MUST be over the top.
Have you ever seen someone try to half-ass satire? That's when you end up with the middle of the road garbage that reads as much like eugenics as it does any kind of meaningful social statement. I suppose the absolute best satirists can get away with subtlelty, but not often (especially not now, when your average reader has a 30 second attention span). Even Orwell needed talking pigs... |

It's painfully unfunny. That's the most offensive part.

I have no problem with it, other than it's not funny/entertaining.

No, it's not funny/entertaining. Why do you care?

I suppose you could also ask if those folks who thought the Palin thing WAS a big deal, think this is a big deal too. Of course, I wouldn't expect you to take that angle.

That's what you were whining about? A jab at the national media?

That pretty much sums up the difference as I see it too. I do think both instances are over-the-top though. The Palin video, because of the outright fabrications and involvement of family members rather than the politicians themselves. In this case, the obvious racial overtones which are used as fuel to ignite the hyperbole and demagoguery. FTR, I'm not talking about whether or not these are within the technical bounds of the first amendment...just whether or not they are in really bad taste (and that as such should be condemned/ignored by the public.)
