New music discoveries

I've recently been going all out to find new music and thought we could use a thread giving each other a head's up on new music we may not have heard of.By new I mean to you, since we have such a variance of ages here I'm sure that some of us may be aware of the artists mentioned but nonetheless I'd like to get an idea of other stuff out there.

If you'd like to add a link or copy and paste an article that'd be great.

I'm going to start with Earl Slick and I can't say enough good about his project Zig Zag.10 songs in all the project includes a few instrumentals as well as some special guest singers including David Bowie whom Earl has played with.My personal favs are the songs 1735 and Zig Zag.

Here's a little more about him.

Earl Slick: Six String Outlaw

The image of the journeyman guitarist is one of modern day rock and roll folklore. The idea of the lone gunslinger, a six string outlaw that brings their magic to all the world's stages before riding off into the sunset leaving us to wonder when they will return.

Earl Slick has been an in demand guitarist for the better part of 30 years having played on the most pivotal of albums by none other than David Bowie (David Live, Station To Station), John Lennon (Double Fantasy, Milk And Honey) and Ian Hunter (Overnight Angels). However, after years of constant touring and recording, Earl was exhausted spiritually and creatively and headed off for a much-needed break in the early 90s.

Disappearing for a few years, Earl was on the road once again with David Bowie in the summer of 2000 and has remained with the band touring numerous times and appearing on Bowie's "Live At The BBC Theatre" and "Reality" albums.

Having his creativity sparked by this recent activity, Earl began writing in earnest, the results of which produced his sterling new album "Zig Zag". Eager to talk about his first solo album in 12 years, Earl Slick graciously spoke to MusicTAP recently before finishing the first US leg of Bowie's "Reality Tour"

I've been listening to an awful lot of Amorphis lately. They're excellent. Melodic Death mixed with folk music dashed with some rock. They actually put out a professional music video for the title track of last year's album, "Silent Waters," which I will now embed:

A band that the prog-power fans here should really dig is Cloudscape. I discovered them months ago; they're like Evergrey... but better. Embedded is a promotional video for the song "Demon Tears" off of the 2006 album "Crimson Skies."

Of course, if you haven't checked out the band and album that's been in my avatar for the past 5 months, then you really should. Here is the music video (just a bunch of CGI nonesense, the song is the important thing) for the song "Beneath the Waves," from the album "01011001." Prepare to be blown away by the bad-ass singers (Jorn Lande, Daniel Gildenlow, Hansi Kursch, Steve Lee, just to name a few).

Really enjoying Spiritualized - Songs in A&E.
You wouldn't think such depressing fare could soar.
Reminiscent of Billy Bragg, Damien Rice, taking cues from The Band at times, and early Stones at others, shades of ballady Radiohead when the feedback or mellotron makes an appearance.

I just listened to a few of their songs on imeem.com. I like I Gotta Fire, Sitting on Fire, Sweet Talk, and Death Take Your Fiddle.

I broke down and bought the Vampire Weekend CD, and I'm loving it. I'd heard some songs off of it before, but the album stands up in its entirety.

Also listening to Panda Bear's album "Person Pitch", one of the geniuses behind Animal Collective. Good stuff.

Got Tom Petty's "side project" Mudcrutch as well. I'm digging it. Definitely a little different side of Petty.

Currently playing Jay-Z's "American Gangster." Solid stuff from the jiggaman as always.

Finally Steve Earle's "Washington Square," is probably one of his more solid albums to put out in a while.

Didn't know if you knew but Mudcrutch was the name of Petty's first band and if you're a big fan I strongly suggest checking out the documentary by Peter Bogdonavich called Runnin' Down A Dream,it's a full 4 hours and 2 thumbs way up.

I also have the new project Mudcrutch and am absolutely diggin' it as well.

You know, I was really pretty dissapointed by this cd. I think my primary complaints are first, there are far too many vocalists and no one really gets a chance to stand out much, and two: lyrically.. it just sucks. I've never been a big fan of his lyrics but this cd presented me with a lot of "I can't believe he/she actually just said that" moments.
