ENDelt's deck thread - Page 9

One of my favorite things about my condo is my big deck. Unfortunately, my deck's kinda ****ed up. I knew it was ****ed up when I bought the joint, but I've never gotten around to doing anything about it. I'm finally taking care of that now. Over the next couple weeks I'm getting bids on getting work done on it. I figured I should put my digital camera to good use and document the transformation.

An added benefit of sharing the pics here is some of you fellers that like to build stuff and know all about that might pipe up from time to time and say, "Hey, you should do this." Or, "Holy smokes, you dipshit. I can't believe you did that."

I find the deck kinda hard to explain to folks who have never seen it. Hopefully these pics make it easier to understand what my situation is. If I can provide a better picture or description of something, let me know.

I notice you have a solid wall around your deck. Have Phobia leave a section a little shorter so you and your male guests can experience one of the finer pleasures in life: whizing off the deck. Not every one has enough length to flop it over or a small enough prostrate (Skip) to arch it over.

I suppose that depends on the progress made this weekend. I honestly don't know how long it will take him to finish what's left. It seems to me that there's a lot left to be done, but I don't have a solid grasp on what tasks are more time consuming than others.

The wall at the height it is has to stay. Have to maintain the look of the complex. Besides, whizzing over the wall would either mean wizzing on the parking lot, or the pool deck. I'm fairly confident none of my neighbors would appreciate that.

That's looking pretty sweet. Very pretty wood that's beign used. I didn't realize you'd gottten so ambitious with it...bar, outdoor kitchen, daaamn.

Well, I will give you a call while I'm there. I will be staying closer to the airport this time at Legacy Golf Resort. Be there Monday night through Friday.

Does anyone (Phob?) know if it's acceptable to use 2"x6"x8' for framing and joists? Deck's going to be 8' x 8' and will not have much weight on it. I know the 2x6s are fine for the decking, but I was curious if the framing and joists need to be 2x8s or if I can get by with 2x6s.

If the deck is 12" or less off the ground, yes you can use 2X6 for the joists. Anything higher should use 2x8

Well, the purpose of the "rule" or code is to prevent falls in case of breakage. So, it must be 12" from the top of the decking. It may even be 18" in your area. You would need to check with a local building inspector or call your housing authority.

Thanks again. I'm pretty sure that it'll be less than 12" at the top of the decking.
