Mock (2/22/13)

Some assumptions that I sadly think are starting to take root.

1. The Chiefs resign Bowe and Colquitt, and let Dorsey walk.

2. The Chiefs decide Albert is not a top five LT. He is not resigned.

3. Quinn and Hillis are out. Tyson Jackson is cut. Cassel stays on board, at reduced salary.

4. The team trades its 3rd to the Eagles for Nick Foles and declare him the man going forward. Direckshun tears his hair out.

5. The Chiefs land DE/DT Chris Canty.

6. They get two compensatory picks, an extra third (Carr) and a 6th (Richardson).

On with the show, in the era of Andy Reid and yet another chapter of The Chiefs QB Is A Castoff.

1. OT Luke Joeckel, Texas A&M

I continue to not-buy Geno Smith. I think this team is making Foles the guy going forward, and are keeping Cassel on hand for veteran support.

At the same time, they've let Albert go and you do want to take the #1 player with the #1 pick.

2. DE Margus Hunt, SMU

This, I believe, is a realistic reach for a Chiefs defense that lacks a defensive end after having let Tyson Jackson walk.

Hunt is absolute hell on wheels. He's raw, but his athleticism, incredible size, and strength are worth a high 2nd. He's got JJ Watt upside, and if Andy Reid trusts his coaches the way he did in Philly, he will take a fascinating prospect if he believes he can be coached to his ceiling.

3. CB Terry Hawthorne, Illinois

I think Hawthorne makes a ton of sense for the Chiefs to take a shot at plugging in a Day One starter on day two of the draft. Again, I believe the Chiefs could start Javier Arenas at the #2 corner position, but the Chiefs can't expect that to pan out long term. Hawthorne is your usual Illinois product: physically gifted with a shit ton of promise if developed properly.

The good news? Hawthorne regularly stepped up and played his ass off for the Illini. He wasn't always successful but he played a ton of man coverage and never backed down. Makes tons of sense to me.

4. ILB Nico Johnson, Alabama

I feel this is a slight reach by about a round for the Chiefs, but this is a fairly thin draft at inside linebacker on day three, and Johnson is a classic thumper and the Chiefs have a murder/homicide-sized hole at that position. Alabama used him exclusively in that role, so he makes a ton of sense in KC.

Though I hold out hope Dorsey chases for Brad Jones.

5. QB E.J. Manuel, Florida State

I think that if the Chiefs are to score any value at the QB position in this draft, it'd be something like a day two guy falling to day three. The NFL absolutely hates this crop of QBs, and I don't blame them, but I think Manuel has some promise as a guy with good size and tons of experience making reads in FSU's offense.

I don't know if he's going to pan out, but I honestly just hate this QB class with a passion. How did it come to this?

6. ILB Jelani Jenkins, Florida

The Chiefs need more athleticism at this position other than DJ. Jenkins is a classic coverage 'backer.

6. WR Marquess Wilson, Washington State

There are better WRs at this juncture, but they're all slot receivers, where the Chiefs are already two-deep. Wilson is a legitimate deep threat on the outside.

7. RB Robbie Rouse, Fresno State

Rouse is a smaller back with some great athleticism. This would give the Chiefs several backs with game breaking ability.

EJ Manuel going in the 5th is absurd.

The Chiefs might re-sign Bowe and Colquitt.

If this is the kind of draft Reid/Dorsey gives us, I will resign as a Chiefs fan.

The thought of Cassel remaining on the team is hard to stomach. I won't be surprised if they trade for Foles or Smith. Hope Geno wow's them at the combine. Would Datone Jones of UCLA be a viable pick in the second for DE if Dorsey and Jackson aren't retained?

Isn't Manuel flying up the boards al la Kaepernick? He's probably the most athletic QB in the draft and with the way the NFL is shifting to guys like him you think he'll be there in the 5th? Who planted the mary j factory in his 2nd bedroom?

He is moving up boards but he wasn't EVER going to be available in the 5th.

He was a 3rd round prospect AT THE LOWEST when the season ended and he's been mildly impressive so far at all the workouts.
