Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

Just watched Brooklyn's Finest. It is a strange film. The acting is on point. The cinematography, the shots, the edits, the cuts are all well-done on the part of director Antoine Fuqua & crew. A lot of the press coverage of the movie centered on the screenplay, written by a first-time writer who was working at a tollbooth, and that screenplay has a nice, real sense of dialogue.

So why is this film a disappointment? Well, whatever merits the script does have is tarnished by the use of just about every cop movie cliche in existence. Watched Crazy Heart. Couldn't figure out why I had been so resistant to watching until after. I think I must hate self-indulgent/crazy brilliant artist/genius stories, although I loved Vincent and Theo and Be Here to Love Me so I'm not really sure. This definitely goes in the Ray, Beautiful Mind, Pollock blah pile of some nice acting in hideous stories.

Bummer, as I wanted to eventually see this film.

"Ray" was directed and cut like a TV movie of the week and it's still shocking to me that it received so many accolades.

Watched the Runaways last night. I liked it a lot. It's got the usual cliches of rock biopics but I like music biopics. It's very similar to "What we do is secret" the movie about Darby Crash and the Germs.

Seconded.

Ray/Walk the Line, etc slavishly stick to a blah biopic formula. Crazy Heart is more akin, stylistically, to The Wrestler.

Exactly. Good comparison.

Though, I have to admit... I like Walk The Line. A lot. Hell of a better movie than Ray.

I just watched Colin Firth's magnificent performance in A Single Man. Jeff Bridges must have had one hell of a role in Crazy Heart and I'm now contemplating watching it (previously didn't interest me). However, I just don't see how it could top Firth's performance.

Moreover, to not even garner a Best Picture nod is mind-boggling to me. Everything about the movie was nailed to perfection. I loved the way they went in and out of moments. Beautiful is the best way to describe it.

And then the score on top of it is underrated.

I just watched Crazy Heart, I've had it sitting on my coffee table from Netflix for over a month. I wish I'd watched it sooner; a fantastic story.

Nailed to perfection? I got annoyed the 40th time that Tom Ford made the colors bloom brightly out of the film's normal sepia tone. It was the visual equivalent of an overeager score: pretty but obvious to the point of being emotion-by-numbers. I also thought that they ending was self-defeating. But man did Colin Firth act the Hell out of his character. He was tremendous (and, yes, Jeff Bridges was on-par and probably better).
