Germany rejects Trump's claim it owes NATO and U.S. 'vast sums' for defense

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-us...ource=facebook

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that Germany owes NATO and the United States "vast sums" of money for defense.

"There is no debt account at NATO," von der Leyen said in a statement, adding that it was wrong to link the alliance's target for members to spend 2 percent of their economic output on defense by 2024 solely to NATO.

"Defense spending also goes into UN peacekeeping missions, into our European missions and into our contribution to the fight against IS terrorism," von der Leyen said.

She said everyone wanted the burden to be shared fairly and for that to happen it was necessary to have a "modern security concept" that included a modern NATO but also a European defense union and investment in the United Nations.

Trump said on Twitter on Saturday - a day after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington - that Germany "owes vast sums of money to NATO & the United States must be paid more for the powerful, and very expensive, defense it provides to Germany!"

Trump has urged Germany and other NATO members to accelerate efforts to meet NATO's defense spending target.

German defense spending is set to rise by 1.4 billion euros to 38.5 billion euros in 2018 - a figure that is projected to represent 1.26 percent of economic output, Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said.

In 2016, Germany's defense spending ratio stood at 1.18 percent.

During her trip to Washington, Merkel reiterated Germany's commitment to the 2 percent military spending goal.

You'd have to ask Amnorix, of course, but IMO the idea that Switzerland is "armed to the teeth" is laughable.

Some estimates have Switzerland behind only the U.S. and Yemen in gun ownership per capita.

To say that's not "armed to the teeth", at least in comparison to the rest of the planet, is laughable.

The context of this thread is military might not the ability to deter home invasion. Switzerland isn't armed to the teeth.

Her comment reads "They", not "it".

Unless you're claiming that BEP was considering Switzerland to be multiple countries, you're way off base. Her post, as written, clearly reads as if she was interested in Switzerland's national defense spending in the context of it being a country with a high level of armed individuals. You should stop digging before you start looking as ridiculous as Amnorix did with his post.

You can disagree with me if you want, but you can't convince me. Switzerland isn't armed to the teeth.

That's because you're actively choosing to be an idiot, when you have been given an intelligent alternative. That's on you, and it's not the first time. Your choice, though.

I agree with you that conflating the success of Switzerland's liberal private firearms laws with national military strength is mixing apples and oranges.

They've only about 3% of the population on active duty in a country of 8 million, which probably puts them in the middle of the pack for the first world. I think only about half of them are professional soldiers, the rest presumably being conscripts.

Unlike some other heavily armed nations, Switzerland’s gun ownership is deeply rooted in a sense of patriotic duty and national identity. Weapons are kept at home because of the long-held belief that enemies could invade tiny Switzerland quickly, so every soldier had to be able to fight his way to his regiment’s assembly point. (Switzerland was at risk of being invaded by Germany during World War II but was spared, historians say, because every Swiss man was armed and trained to shoot.)

These countries don't think they have to spend much on defense, since Big Brother is doing the heavy lifting for them.

I'd like to see the US reel in some of our umbrella and focus our spending only on things that directly benefit the United States and our close, loyal friends.

I hope we move it to 8-10% of the GDP. Minimally to make sure the men and women in the military are some of the highest paid people in the land.

The attached is pathetic. These men and women deserve to live exceedingly well.

And combat troops need to be paid a King's ransom for the added risk.

They should receive the best mental and physical treatment available for life.

I would also go so far as to make them exempt from paying taxes if they serve a set amount of time.

No everyone should have skin in the game, especially if they're called to war to risk their lives.

I read we're relying more on paid mercenaries, who are paid better too. More of these to come.

You understand that we already pay FAR more on defense than the next top 7 countries COMBINED, and you want to triple it?

What is the actual goal for you here, because this makes zero sense. Zero.

And why pay more for our troops than we have to in order to recruit and maintain an excellent military?
