It's been nearly 11 years since Throne of Bhaal brought the Baldur's Gate series to a legendary and satisfying close, but now... something is stirring behind the scenes. We don't know what it is just yet, exactly, but what we do know is that there's now a theme song-playing Baldur's Gate teaser site online and that former BioWare designer Trent Oster and his crew over at Beamdog are behind it.

Does this mean we're going to be getting some kind of a remake in the same vein as MDK2 HD? Or perhaps an iOS, Android, or console port like Interplay and Beamdog teamed up for previously? Or maybe, just maybe, it will be an entirely new game in the Baldur's Gate franchise? We don't know, and when we quizzed Trent about it, all he'd say is:

That "complete edition" he mentions was already sleuthed last week, so apparently this is something totally different. To add to the mystery, there are comments left for us in the teaser site's source page:

Baldurs Gate games were so bad ass. Even the Champions of Norrath game was awesome.

News: Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, announced this evening, is to feature new content from members of the BioWare team who made the original game.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is a technically remastered version of the classic ’90s RPG, and features new content put together by members of the original BioWare team. What’s more, the team have plans for a Baldur’s Gate 3.

The Enhanced Edition comes from the Overhaul Games – the development wing of Beamdog, the digital distribution service headed by ex-BioWare man Trent Oster.

The game will run on the 2D, isometric Infinity Enhanced – an upgraded version of the engine which also powered Planescape Torment and the Icewind Dale series – and will include the original’s expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast.

A Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is also in the works, which will incorporate Throne of Bhaal, the sizeable expansion which concluded the series.

“We’re pulling in a few members of the original team to work on the title(s). We’ve had the code for a while,” Oster told BeefJack.

“We’ve been working on it for a while. Took me over a year to get all the people to the table to cut the deal.”

Said Oster on Twitter: “We want #BG3 as well. [The Enhanced Edition] is part of the master plan.”

The Enhanced Edition is slated for a Summer 2012 release date. It’s coming to PC via Beamdog, with other platforms to be confirmed on the official site on Thursday next week.

They should have used the NW2 (and Witcher) engine instead, IMO. Still going to be amazing, though.

Baldurs Gate was a disappointment when it came out, I wouldn't mind a remake of Planescape Torment though. That game was tha shizznizzle.
