'Star Wars' saga set for 3D release starting 2012

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...92835d50e86a3a

Big news on the 3D front.

Sources indicate that George Lucas is set on rereleasing the "Star Wars" franchise in new 3D conversions beginning in 2012. Although 3D versions have been rumored for some time, Lucas purportedly was waiting until there were enough screens available to make the release a sizable event.

Fox, which released all six original "Star Wars" films, also would release the 3D versions.

Episode I, "The Phantom Menace," would be first out of star-dock during early 2012. After that, each film would be released in order at the same time in consecutive years, depending on how well the first rerelease does.

Each conversion takes at least a year to complete, with Lucas overseeing the process to make sure each is as perfect as possible. He has said that the "Avatar" experience convinced him that "Star Wars" is ready for the state-of-the-art 3D treatment.

Starting with "Phantom Menace," Lucasfilm would use several higher-end conversion houses to work on the project. By late winter or early spring in 2012, the exhibition industry should have all the 3D screens anyone could want for such a release.

At present, pics are limited to 2,000-2,500 3D locations owing to an insufficient installed base of projectors and screens. Movie theaters are adding 3D screens at a clip of 500 a month in the U.S. Foreign exhibitors also are pushing into 3D as quickly as possible now that financing for the installations is flowing.

Also pushing the timetable is a potential breakthrough in 3D TV technology. With Samsung penetrating the market with 50,000-plus 3D-equipped sets and Sony recently sending its version to market, the home-viewing experience could be primed for 3D DVD versions of the films by the time the new 3D theatrical releases have run their course.

Lucas purportedly is lining up the theatrical rereleases as a lead-in to the ultimate home-viewing experience. Beyond that, the property would launch to other 3D media.

In the meantime, Lucas plans a comprehensive Blu-ray Disc set of the six films next year, which would include upgraded picture and sound quality, new deleted scenes and special features.

I mean now... not when the hard core fans saw it over and over, trying to find a reason to like it. That ship has sailed, and it's pretty much universally accepted that the movie sucks.
Well, I'd say that since it grossed $102 million this year, which is better than about 95% of all other releases this year, quite a few. Probably somewhere around 150,000 people, give or take 10,000.

I'm not sure if you missed it but TPM was re-released this past February in 3D.

Alot of the serious adult "unique" drama stuff has migrated over to television now IMO. The writing on these serial shows on HBO, Showtime, FX and AMC is sooo much better than most of the stuff in movies.

The big mainstream studios have pretty much abandoned anything that isnt high concept or doesnt have a built in audience. Like Dane said, too much money at stake now.

I think the proportion of good movies to shitty movies has stayed about the same the past 30 years.

matter of opinion there. I haven't really liked most of the extended and pay channel shows. Of course, LOST pretty much killed any interest I had in shows that carry on whole season story arcs. The only way I can see any of those shows is to watch them online anyway. I refuse to pay the unreasonable cable fees to get a bunch of channels I don't want or need.

Plans to release Ep 2 and 3 in 3D this fall have been scrapped. I have no idea if this had anything to do with Abrams?

http://www.deadline.com/2013/01/excl...n-new-trilogy/

I learned of this decision just now from Lucasfilm‘s promotional partners who are telling me the studio now owned by Disney wants to focus only on “rebooting the franchise” with three new Star Wars films. This surprising decision follows the underwhelming box office performance of Episode I: The Phantom Menace re-released in 3D in February 2012.

It debuted to only $23M domestically but maybe even more importantly hardcore fans felt it was yet another craven cash grab by George Lucas. Back in September 2010, Lucasfilm and then-distributor Fox announced that all 6 films in the Star Wars franchise would be converted to 3D. Episode II: Attack Of The Clones (first released on May 16, 2002) was to hit theaters in 3D on September 20th, 2013, while Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith (first released on May 19, 2005) was to play in 3D on October 11, 2013.

This news comes just days after Disney confirmed that J.J. Abrams will direct the new Star Wars: Episode VII scheduled to be released in 2015. It’s the first new Star Wars movie since 2005. Michael Arndt is writing the script. Disney bought Lucasfilm in October 2012 for $4 billion, with the Star Wars franchise obviously the jewel in the crown. At the time, Disney CEO Bob Iger said three more Star Wars films were in the pipeline.

Or welcome to big company cost savings. They have other projects to have the people working on. They probably don't feel the ROI is high enough with the conversion, versus another movie they can make with the same resources.

Or creative control versus profit maximization.

The bonus is that maybe disney could be convinced to release the theatrical released original trilogy in Bluray if it made economic sense. Lucas wasn't doing it because it wasn't his vision.
