Let's talk about the Patriots

5-0 heading into a Sunday Night matchup with the Pats.

This should be a good one, men.

It depends on what you define as deep. He's never been a guy to throw the ball deep downfield. That's never been his strength. They spread you out and pick you apart.

Put it this way... Alex Smith had as many 30+ yard thrown completions last year as Brady had in the last three years... combined. And Brady went to the Super Bowl in two of those years. He'll slice you up in the short and intermediate game though.

I mentioned it in one of the other threads but where he kills you is in the 10-20 yard range... and that chart bears that out perfectly.

Correct, but he was still better than he's been this year

Just for reference... since the beginning of 2015, Brady on passes thrown 30+ yards:

16-74 (21%), 3 TD, 7 INT

Meanwhile, Alex Smith, who many NFL fans would consider about the worst deep ball QB in the league, over that same span:

25-58 (43%), 12 TD, 2 INT

Pats are slow.

I'm telling you...we just have too much talent for them.

They are going to play soft and pocket contain and Mahomes is going to do his best Brady impression and we're going to pick up 200 yards of YAC.

This is queered data because:

1. Tom is an outlier in that he can run an elite offense without the deep ball.

2. No one is using 30+ yards as the qualifier. It's always been 20+ yards.

Why don't you give us Roethlisberger, Rodgers or even Matt Ryan now?

Pats defense is way below average defending WR and TE. They're going to get bodied.

Slow. There should be no reason we don't drop 40 on these clowns.

Quote:
On Sunday, the Patriots’ defenders will want to stay out of foot races against the Chiefs’ offensive players, who are much faster.

The Patriots could, and likely will, play a lot of zone defense to avoid doing so. If it works, it will force the Chiefs to put together long drives and give the Patriots opportunities to stiffen in the red zone. If it doesn’t, it’ll be ugly. Whether it works or not hinges on everyone knowing where to be.

“This is a very, very slow defense,” said former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison. “So they are going to have to play smart. They are going to have to make sure they are more positioned.”

This offers a good test for cornerback Stephon Gilmore. When the Patriots play man-to-man defense, he’s likely to shadow Hill. But when the Patriots are in zone, it will test how far he’s come in their defense since this time last year, when he was often part of communication breakdowns that led to big gains, such as Hill’s 75-yard touchdown.
https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/p...FaK/story.html

Quote:
Volin: I think the Chiefs are a really bad matchup for the Patriots because their top players are their tight end, running back, and speedy jack-of-all-trades, three types of players that always give the Patriots’ defense big problems. The Patriots can always shut down a wide receiver. But having to defend Kelce, Hill, and Hunt with their linebackers and safeties is always a huge problem. The Patriots tried to play a lot of zone last year, and self destructed with blown assignments and communication errors.
Quote:
I’m sure [Patriots coach] Bill Belichick and [de-facto defensive coordinator] Brian Flores recognize some flaw or another with that offense, but relative to what Ben said, how can the Patriots possibly have the speed to exploit anything?

Princiotti: Right, so the speed poses a huge problem because the Patriots defense isn’t fast. It can be overcome (the Dolphins also have a lot of speed on offense) but not when there are communication issues, as Ben said. So this will definitely test the Patriots’ preparation. Chad is smart to bring up Brian Flores, since I think this game will say a lot about how he’s coaching the defense.

Volin: Interestingly, the worst two defensive performances in Belichick’s career came last year: Week 1 against the Chiefs (42 points, 537 yards), and Super Bowl LII against the Eagles (41 points, 538 yards), against Andy Reid and Doug Pederson (aka Andy Reid Jr.), respectively. Same offense, same run-pass option principles.

I remember hearing that about Brady before Moss showed up. Then he was great at it! Then it was he isn't so hot, it's just Moss. Then he was ok, (Hernandez/Gronk, and then a little later with Cooks), and now he sucks.

It's mostly been a function of what deep threats there are in addition in the smurf attack -- short area, quick hit stuff -- that they primarily run.
