The next 007 movie

SKYFALL

3 November 2011 Last updated at 08:07 ET

Bond film called Skyfall

By Tim Masters, Entertainment and arts correspondent, BBC News

The title of the 23rd James Bond film has been confirmed as Skyfall.

The latest 007 adventure will star Daniel Craig for the third time. Leading ladies have been confirmed as French actress Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris.

Skyfall is being directed by Sam Mendes, who won an Oscar for 1999's American Beauty.

Mendes said the storyline will take the secret agent to London, China, Turkey and Scotland.

It will see Bond's loyalty tested to M, his superior, while espionage headquarters MI6 faces an attack.

The movie, which sees the return of Dame Judi Dench as spy boss M, will also star Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Javier Bardem as the villain of the piece.

It will be released in the UK on 26 October 2012.

Craig told reporters in London that the cast would start filming sequences for the new movie later on Thursday.

Much speculation about the new film has focused on what Mendes will bring to the franchise, with some suggesting he will tone down - or even abandon altogether - the action sequences.

But the director denied that this was the case. He told reporters in London that the "fantastic script" had "all the elements of a classic Bond movie, including - to quell any rumours - lots of action".

When asked what fans could expect from the latest film, he added: "The movie will reveal everything, and there's lots of surprises."
Producer Barbara Broccoli said no-one had yet been chosen to write and perfom the Bond theme tune.

Financial troubles

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the first Bond movie, 1962's Dr No.

James Bond is one of the longest-running franchises in film history, but Bond 23 will mark the end of a four year gap.
The last 007 outing was in 2008's Quantum of Solace, directed by Marc Forster.

Work on the 23rd film was suspended in April 2010 because of uncertainty over the company's future.

The franchise had been on hold amid financial troubles, with MGM filing for bankruptcy protection last November.

A rescue deal and restructuring plan put US firm Spyglass Entertainment at the helm of MGM, which had struggled due to several box office flops and a DVD sales slump.

Craig - who made his Bond debut in Casino Royale in 2006 - is the sixth actor to play the British secret agent in the official Bond series.
Sir Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Sir Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan preceded him in the iconic role.

Casino Royale, was the most successful instalment in the franchise's 49-year history, making $594m (£385m) worldwide.

Saw the midnight showing Thursday. I really liked the movie but, I'm not sure just how much I liked it. There are just a couple of things about it that I..... I don't know. I don't know what exactly I'm trying to say. For one, I thought the film contradicted itself in one regard -

Spoiler!

Nearly every Bond movie is long. At least the ones since the mid 70s.

Won't go into detail as I don't want to spoil anything, I will just say that it is well worth seeing on the big screen. Craig has really taken hold of the Bond role and is making it his own.
I haven't seen it yet, but here's an extremely interesting take on the direction the series has gone:

Not a spoiler at all, just a long article.

Ultimately I see some truth to the review - are we at risk of making Bond just another Jason Bourne? I know these movies are more 'gritty' and 'real', but wasn't that what made Bond, Bond? Moore was too campy, agreed, as was Dalton and the later Brosnan (not the early ones, though).

I just worry that we aren't making 'Bond' movies these days as much as we are action movies with Bond as a character. The character could be named Steve and the movie would be substantially unchanged.

We have enough tortured super-assassins, do we not? It seems like we're making Bond a less and less unique character at this point.

Although this is not same world as the 60s, in any way, shape or form, this Bond felt very much to me like a modern take on Bond inspired by Dr, No/From Russia With Love/Goldfinger/On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I think it would be difficult to sit through this one and think "this is James Bourne".

Given the reactions of most of the south, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to be frightened of gay people...

I think it's pretty obvious how Javier Bardem's character is scary, but that's just me.

I said that same thing a few months back. I can't get into the new Bond movies because they have a Bourne feel to them.

Yes, but Bond hasn't been a trendsetter since Connery. After that, they adapted to whatever movement was going on at the time in order to stay relevant. Blaxploitation leads to Live and Let Die; the Bruce Lee Kung Fu fad gives us The Spy Who Loved Me; Star Wars leads (directly) to Moonraker; Raiders of the Lost Ark led to Octopussy; and the resurgence of Hong Kong chopsocky led to Tomorrow Never Dies. It's how the movies stayed on top of things.

So, sure, they'll have a Bourne feel to them, but that doesn't mean they'll be Bourne clones. As stated before, I don't see any danger of confusing the two characters, or the overarching storylines.

Saw it yesterday. Agree with those who say it's way better than Quantum (an admittedly low bar), not quite as good as Casino Royale.

I really like Craig's Bond.

Your exactly right. Bond films have adapted to nearly every fad at different time periods.

It was Man with the Golden Gun though, that had the early 70s Kung Fu vibe.

Great weekend for Bond in the US: including Thursday shows, a 90 million dollar weekend.

In addition, Skyfall has already earned more than 400 million overseas.

Um, holy ****ing shit.

Not only is it the best Bond movie ever, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. PERIOD.

The symbolism of M as Bond's mother in this movie is just incredible.

I cried.

The ending ****ING KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK. Holy **** the James Bond fanboy in me was going wild.

There was not a wasted frame in this work of art...and if the Academy does not vote it best picture I will personally kidnap all of the members and tie them up to chairs, strip them naked and re-enact the testicle torture scene from Casino Royale.

I'm going to go see this again in IMAX because holy **** it was beautiful.
