New music discoveries

I've recently been going all out to find new music and thought we could use a thread giving each other a head's up on new music we may not have heard of.By new I mean to you, since we have such a variance of ages here I'm sure that some of us may be aware of the artists mentioned but nonetheless I'd like to get an idea of other stuff out there.

If you'd like to add a link or copy and paste an article that'd be great.

I'm going to start with Earl Slick and I can't say enough good about his project Zig Zag.10 songs in all the project includes a few instrumentals as well as some special guest singers including David Bowie whom Earl has played with.My personal favs are the songs 1735 and Zig Zag.

Here's a little more about him.

Earl Slick: Six String Outlaw

The image of the journeyman guitarist is one of modern day rock and roll folklore. The idea of the lone gunslinger, a six string outlaw that brings their magic to all the world's stages before riding off into the sunset leaving us to wonder when they will return.

Earl Slick has been an in demand guitarist for the better part of 30 years having played on the most pivotal of albums by none other than David Bowie (David Live, Station To Station), John Lennon (Double Fantasy, Milk And Honey) and Ian Hunter (Overnight Angels). However, after years of constant touring and recording, Earl was exhausted spiritually and creatively and headed off for a much-needed break in the early 90s.

Disappearing for a few years, Earl was on the road once again with David Bowie in the summer of 2000 and has remained with the band touring numerous times and appearing on Bowie's "Live At The BBC Theatre" and "Reality" albums.

Having his creativity sparked by this recent activity, Earl began writing in earnest, the results of which produced his sterling new album "Zig Zag". Eager to talk about his first solo album in 12 years, Earl Slick graciously spoke to MusicTAP recently before finishing the first US leg of Bowie's "Reality Tour"

In a related story, Earnest said that he wishes people would stop doing things in him. It is giving him ulcers and indigestion.

This is a great thread idea that's getting no love. So, I'll pimp something that I expect exactly zero people to like.

I discovered this band called Tenochtitlan. They're from Russia, and the write songs about the ancient Aztec, Mayan, and Inca civilizations. The lyrics are in Russian and broken Mayan and Aztec. The song titles are mostly in Aztec.

They play a sort of atmospheric/ambient tranquil jungle music that really evokes South America, and they mix that with elements of doom metal. It's weird fun stuff that's worth a listen, I guess...

...especially since you can download both of their albums, "Chac Och-Ut," and "Epoch of the Five Suns" for free(!) @ http://www.realmusic.ru/albums/3568/ and http://www.realmusic.ru/albums/3353/

Yeah,I was hoping to make some new discoveries through this thread.

As for Tenochtitlan I listened to one song,an instrumental(I'm still on dial-up until next week so it took forever)and it reminded me of a movie score. Not to compare the two groups but I was reminded of a movie called Sorcerer that Tangerine Dream did the score for while listening to the instrumental.

I wouldn't say I didn't like it,but I'd definitely have to hear more to make a final call,in fact after next week I'll revist it and listen further.

Thanks, hopefully we'll get some more contributors for some new music.

The second track from the album you d/l from is more representative of what they do. I don't believe that I'll listen to them much, but it's original. Which is impressive in this day and age.

As for this thread, it's probably my favorite idea on the boards right now. More people should participate.

I like to listen to new and very different music... But man, I can't see how anybody could listen to this and actually enjoy it. I'm sure not criticizing your music taste -- to each his own. I wouldn't mind trying to understand what about this does anything for you though.

It's a strange sort of atmosphere. I never listen to this band apart from the occasional time a song of their comes up on shuffle mode. They're sort of fun in short, occasional bursts. Though, you have to enjoy doom metal in the first place to find dense, atmospheric music to be "fun" as I have described it.

Not bad, not for me, tho. Maybe its because I HATE the name. They sound nothing like either The Eagles, or death metal.

I'll tell ya, one place you can find new music is at www.pandora.com. You make a station based on a favorite band of yours. Say your band is Pink Floyd, it will play you Floyd songs, plus find you lesser known artists that have the same sound.

I am listening to the Floyd station now, and am listening to a band called The Perishers, and I like it, the song is called "Weekends"
