Doctor Who

Been meaning to start a thread on this for years and never have for some reason. Big fan of both the original (what I've seen/remember of it...) and the rebooted series.

Doctor Who's Amy and Rory to leave during next series

By Tim Masters Entertainment and arts correspondent, BBC News

Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill - who play Doctor Who companions Amy Pond and Rory - are to leave the show during the next series.

Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat made the announcement at a screening of the Christmas episode at BBC TV Centre in London.

"The final days of the Ponds are coming," Moffat said.

"I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."

He said the Doctor, played by Matt Smith, was going to meet "a new friend". It is believed that role has not yet been cast.

On the departure of Gillan and Darvill, Matt Smith said: "We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show and we've really had to hold hands and help each other through it.

"So it's very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that's what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards."

The Christmas Day special - titled The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe - sees the Time Lord go on an adventure with Madge Arwell (Claire Skinner) and her two children, Lily and Cyril, when they are evacuated from London to Dorset during World War II.

Doctor Who: The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe spoiler-free review

Simon Brew

Here's our spoiler-free look at this year's Doctor Who Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe...

Published on Dec 15, 2011

Well, that was surreal.

Never, in all the years of covering Doctor Who at Den Of Geek, have I sat at screening where Steven Moffat sat half way between two major figures in the British government.

On one side, the Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls. Meanwhile, the Chancellor Of The Exchequer, George Osborne, was a few seats to the other. Given that we were all invited to suggest who our scariest monsters were before the screening, it was a wonder so many resisted such an easy opportunity. Rest assured that we did our bit.

The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, though, the reason you're actually here, is lovely. An enchanting hour of television, anchored by a tremendous turn from Claire Skinner. She’s not a million miles away from her work in Outnumbered here, but as Madge Arwell, a Second World War widower facing her first Christmas away from her husband, her performance is one of conviction, and measure.

The only bits of the story I’ll tell you are the ones you’re likely to already know. The Doctor arrives into Madge’s life, she does him a good turn, and he promises that he’ll return the favour. As she faces a lonely Christmas, the Doctor returns as The Caretaker, and things evolve from there.

Opening with a few welcome tips of the hat to Star Wars pre-credits, what immediately shines through here is the comedy. There’s an abundance of it, much of it derived from Steven Moffat’s very witty script. But he also gives Matt Smith a platform to showcase his enviable comedic talents, and the first twenty minutes or so is an absolute Christmassy blast. It's very, very funny.

The tone begins, inevitably, to evolve throughout the episode, and the Narnia elements that were hinted come through loud and clear. This is enhanced by some quite wonderful production design, and a delicate score from Murray Gold, too.

It’s very Christmassy in feel, and, as always, there’s a serious core to it. There is a Doctor Who story in the midst of it all, and it’s a pretty standalone one. Furthermore, it’s certainly an episode that you can, and will, enjoy, without requiring quite the levels of concentration demanded come the end of series six.

I also love the fact that Steven Moffat’s writing takes children so seriously. That beneath the jokes and the jabs at the abilities or otherwise of grown-ups, there’s a rock solid heart to what the characters are going through. The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe contains its cast list quite a lot, and that means that there’s genuinely time to focus on what Madge and her family are going through. Real credit and to both Holly Earl and Maurice Cole for making their particularly young characters so believable, and easy to root for.

I was disappointed we didn’t get more of Bill Bailey and Arabella Weir, who were clearly having fun with their roles here, as well as their emotional companion, which again, we won’t spoil for you. Furthermore, the strength of the characters, which made spending time with them a pleasure, meant things dropped just a little when it came time to heavily press on with the story.

But crikey, this was good. It’s a very different episode from last year’s A Christmas Carol, effortlessly blending drama and comedy, whilst also feeling just a bit more relaxed than Who has been for a while. It feels separate enough from the last series, but savvy enough to keep the odd tie in place.

It’s, for me, the best Christmas special since The Christmas Invasion (and I say that having loved last year’s, too), and it’s pitched quite brilliantly, given the day and time it’s going out.

Enjoy it. I did. I can't tell you for sure what the British government thought, though...

Furthermore, Moffat also said that he believes River Song will return, too, but that was as much as we got.

They lose hot-sweet-sassy Amy Pond but keep skanky-awkward-boring River Song? That is reerunis.

Lost And Found: Classic 'Doctor Who' Episodes Located
Adventures touch on time of William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton

Soon, for the first time since their original broadcast, fans will finally be able to watch one more episode of a pair of "Doctor Who" miniseries that were believed to be lost forever.

They were located by a film collector, Terry Burnett, who had actually purchased the canisters in the early 1980s and had no idea that the episodes they contained were considered lost. It wasn't until recently that he discovered them in his collection, and allowed them to be shown earlier this week at the British Film Institute's Missing Believed Wiped festival at the National Film Theatre in London.

The episodes are Part 3 of "Galaxy 4" with William Hartnell, and Part 2 of "The Underwater Menace" with Patrick Troughton. According to Internet Movie Database, "Underwater Menace" centers around a bad guy, Zaroff (Joseph Furst) who, among other things, is trying to turn companion Polly (Anneke Wills) into a fish. The episode, which was written by Geoffrey Orme and directed by Julia Smith, was first broadcast Jan. 21, 1967.

It was one episode in a four-part miniseries that aired as part of the original "Doctor Who's" fourth season.

The episode of the "Galaxy 4" series was actually called "Airlock," and first aired Sept. 25, 1965. It was part of the series' third season, and was written by William Emms and directed by Derek Martinus. The miniseries introduced an alien race known as the Dhavins, and involved companions Vicki (Maureen O'Brien) and Steven Taylor (Peter Purves).

Unfortunately, even with the discovery of these episodes, these miniseries are not complete. "Airlock" is the last remaining episode known to exist now of the four-part "Galaxy 4" series, while the find now means two of the four episodes of "Underwater Menace" now exist. There are still about 100 episodes of "Doctor Who" missing.

Why are these episodes gone? Between 1967 and 1978, BBC would purge film to make room to store new programs, mostly from the belief that they would save money by not needing to keep larger storage facilities, and that there would not be an interest in many programs that had aired years before. Syndication was just in its infancy, and had not really moved into the United Kingdom, so the value of retaining programs for future rebroadcast, in most cases, was mostly non-existent.

What will happen with these found episodes is unclear. The condition of the episodes were not reported, but it's likely that if they were to be offered for re-release, they would need some restoration work done. No plans were announced at the festival or afterward for any re-release.

"The Underwater Menace" miniseries was one of the last projects Orme wrote before retiring. He was a prolific British writer whose career spanned back to 1936. He died in 1978 at the age of 73.

For Emms, his "Doctor Who" episodes were more closer to the beginning of his career. He would write for several other television shows in Britain until 1980, but would die in 1993.

Wills would play Polly in 36 episodes of "Doctor Who," but hasn't been seen on screen since her work in the British series "Strange Report" in 1970. She would later do stage work, especially in the Shakespeare realm, and lived in Canada for awhile before moving back to the United Kingdom. She turned 70 in October.

O'Brien, now 68, appeared in 38 episodes of "Doctor Who," and would stay dear to a character actor career, mostly recently appearing in the British television series "Doctors" in 2003.

Purves, now 72, was in 46 episodes of "Doctor Who" as both Steven Taylor and Morton Dill. He most recently appeared in the British version of "The Office" in 2001.

Wish they would find more of the lost episodes, complete. I loved the work of Troughton, but most of it is in the trash bin.

Sylvester McCoy Wants To Be The Doctor Again
Actor hopes to reprise the role for 50th anniversary

Actor Sylvester McCoy only played The Doctor for two years, but his time at the controls of the Tardis has stayed with him.

So much so that he would love a chance to reprise his role on the modernized "Doctor Who" BBC series.

"I am a part of it, it hasn't ever gone away and I celebrate the 21st Century Doctors," McCoy said.

This year's festive outing, A Christmas Carol, airs on Christmas Day with Season 6 starring Matt Smith kicking off in the spring, but in 2013 the show will reach its milestone 50th anniversary. And according to McCoy, what fans want to see to celebrate the achievement is a multi-Doctor episode.

In the classic series, the multi-Doctor episodes were a chance to see how the current Doctor would interact with his predecessors in order to solve some kind of bizarre mystery, or defeat an opponent so menacing that it would take more than one Doctor to get the best of.

Why hasnt the series done a multi-Doctor story before now? Apparently, former showrunner Russell T. Davies wasnt a fan of the stories and made it a rule not to include them in his series. However, now that Steve Moffat has taken the reins and has re-incorporated a lot of classic mythology into the show, the chances of a multi-Doctor adventure seem a little more likely.

McCoy, though, wants to see more than a modern tale, he is hoping to see even those Doctors that are no longer with us make an appearance using the latest technology to re-create them.

"They've got such imaginations, they could do anything," he said. "Would I do it? Yes, I'd be delighted to. It would be fascinating with all the technology if they could bring back Jon Pertwee and William Hartnell.

This would rock, especially the last part.

Doctor Who news round up: Steven Moffat, videogame news, movie and more

Simon Brew

A few stories from the world of Doctor Who have popped up over the past day or two. So we’ve rounded them up right here…

Published on Dec 21, 2011

A few Doctor Who bits and bobs have popped up over the past few days, so we’ll just crack on and tell you about them.

The Mirror, today, has run a story with quotes from Steven Moffat where he’s been dropping hints about quitting the show. Of course, it’s easy to make way too much of this, because basically, it appears to be him admitting that he’s a human being. “I never find any time to relax”, he said. “All the stuff that surrounds it can be relentless”.

He added that “I haven’t got a plan but I am definitely going to be handing it to someone else”.

We’ll wait and see when that is, hopefully not soon. Is Toby Whithouse next in line, we wonder? Just a thought.

Elsewhere, in another interview with The Scotsman, Moffat has been talking about plans for the 50th anniversary, and he’s dropped hints that we may be getting several specials. Again, it’s easy to read too much into his words, but he said this, when asking about a 50th birthday special in 2013:

“Why talk in the singular? The plans are at an early stage, but we have some very clear ideas about some of the things we’re doing, and I think Doctor Who fans and kids will think it’s the best thing ever. We’ve got a load of very big plans – the mere fact that we’re talking about this two years before the event should tell you how seriously we’re taking it.”

Steven Moffat also appeared on BBC Breakfast, to promote both Doctor Who and Sherlock, and reiterated that any movie will be in line with the current television series, and not a reboot.

Finally, you can take part in an open preview for the upcoming BBC Worldwide videogame, Doctor Who: Worlds In Time. More details here.

Amy and Rory are great characters, but their story has been played out. How many times can either of them die/come back to life/tell each other how much they love them?

I love both of them, but it's time to move on.

Anybody watch the Proms special? I'd love to have been able to take my wife/kids to that performance. Really well done IMHO.

I hear you, I just really like Amy's character (as well as her, uh, assets). And River makes me want to puke.
