Mock (1/23)

Assumptions:

1. GM John Dorsey stays through the remainder of his contract. HC Andy Reid and QB Alex Smith are retained.

2. NT Dontari Poe is franchised.

3. ILB Derrick Johnson does not retire, and will return like Justin Houston did this season.

4. QB Nick Foles is re-signed for 1 year, $3.5m; S Eric Berry is re-signed for 4 years, $44m ($19m guaranteed).

5. CB Terrance Mitchell is extended 3 years, $19m ($5m guaranteed).

6. The Chiefs tender the following players: S Daniel Sorensen, K Cairo Santos

7. The following players walk in free agency: RB Knile Davis, FB Trey Millard, WR Albert Wilson, OG Mike Person, DE Kendall Reyes, DE Jarvis Jenkins

8. The following players are cut: RB Jamaal Charles, TE Ross Travis, OLB Frank Zombo, CB Kenneth Acker

9. The Chiefs bring in 4 compensatory picks: a 3rd (Sean Smith), a 5th (Chase Daniel), and two 6ths (Donald Stephenson & Tyvon Branch).

On with the show:

1.27. OT/G Garett Bolles, Utah

If you're looking for a bare-knuckle brawler to win the line of scrimmage so this team can finally get a run game going, look no further. Bolles is a tackle by trade but comes from a program Andy Reid trusts and will convert him into a power guard who can get movement no matter what. Ehinger at LG, Bolles, at RG, and let's finally see what this OL can do.

2.57. RB Alvin Kamara, Tennessee

The Chiefs' run game has to be a priority this offseason, if Alex Smith isn't going to be. Alex Smith's regression in a year his team didn't have a top-tier run game is no coincidence. Kamara's a dynamic runner and legit home-run threat who can pair up with Spencer Ware to create an additional dimension to this offense.

3.88. WR Isaiah Ford, Virginia Tech

Ford is not the speed demon that Dorsey seems addicted to, but he's a solid talent who can add a lot of value to this offense as a potential #2, if the Chiefs don't want to put Tyreek Hill into that role full time. Adding a fourth receiver to the Maclin-Hill-Conley combo can keep more defenses honest, and Ford excels at winning the one-on-one ball, which he'll be getting a ton of if defenses are keying in on Maclin, Kelce, and Hill. The biggest plus of Ford are his excellent hands. No drops, here.

3.98 (compensatory). TE Jordan Leggett, Clemson

This offense simple needs more reliable receiving options for Smith. Teaming Leggett up with Kelce and Harris would finally give the Chiefs the TE depth they've long needed.

4.125. OLB Devonte Fields, Louisville

Ford/Houston should be a really good rotation, but Hali is just about dead out there. The Chiefs elect to bring in a productive passrusher who won't shit his pants against the run as Zombo too frequently did.

5.163. RB Jamaal Williams, BYU

If Ware goes down, the Chiefs will need a power back. Williams has potential as a more athletic version of Darrin Reaves.

5.173 (compensatory). QB Jerod Evans, Virginia Tech

This guy has the build, the arm, and the athleticism. It's not clear if he has the ability to read NFL defenses. 5th rounders have been gambled on worse.

6.204 (compensatory). CB Ezra Robinson, Tennessee State

6.210 (compensatory). OLB Tashawn Bower, LSU

7.248. WR Fred Ross, Mississippi State

You are truly dumb as a ****ing brick.

And please, explain why Nick Foles would renegotiate his contract when there's already an option for $10,750,000 dollars?

Because otherwise we're going to cut him, and his best landing spot is probably Kansas City.

Also, genious, Terrance Mitchell is under contract with the Chiefs at $690k in 2017, so there's no reason to hand him a deal worth $19 million.

Mitchell just finished his 3rd year in the NFL.

Our best leverage is right now. Sign him to a deal that chains him up in KC while we've only got a five games of tape.

This kid is a goddamn stud.

Again,

There's absolutely no reason to extend him at this point in time.

That's just silly talk, especially those numbers.

Literally both the Packers and Andy Reid have before.

So... there's no way?

So? Did those teams have deficiencies at Cornerback, ILBer, Running Back and especially QB?

Your logic just flat out sucks.

There is no ****ing way that a guard is the BPA at #27.

None.

I don't think the Chiefs have a problem at CB. Peters, Mitchell and Nelson were all very good this year, White is a reserve in year 2 and Gaines isn't a bad depth player.

I'm down for adding another one, but not early

I wouldn't be shocked to see them add another CB in the first 3 rounds, as teams can never have enough CB's.

Unless they're planning to move on from Maclin this year, I can't see them taking a WR at #27, either. If Dalvin Cook is sitting there, they may grab him, although I'd greatly prefer Mahomes.

But outside of Mahomes, I see the three out of the first 4 picks as defensive players. ILB, OLB, CB, Safety (depending on Berry's status) or D-line.

Definitely not a guard.

Any mock draft that doesn't have a QB in the first two rounds must go up in flames.

If you want to get more reliable receiving options for Smith, start by cutting the worst one in Harris and not drafting a yo-yo player like Leggett.

I think you could get a good G/RT player, such as Dion Dawkins or Adam Bisnowaty, in round 2.
