School shut down because of parent group threaten trans student

"A school district in southern Oklahoma was forced to shut down for two days after parents used a Facebook group to threaten violence against a transgender seventh-grade student.

Superintendent Rick Beene closed Achille Public Schools on Monday and Tuesday after parents posted claims on a Facebook group “Achille ISD Parents Group” that the student, who identifies as a girl, was looking over the stalls in the girls’ bathroom.

“Heads up parents of 5th through 7th grade,” parent Jamie Crenshaw said in a now-deleted post. “The transgender is already using the girls bathroom. We have been told how the school has gone above and beyond to make sure he has his own restroom yet he is still using the girls. REALLY… Looks like its going to be a long year.”

Beene would not confirm whether the alleged bathroom incident occurred.

The post set off reactions from other adults who referred to the 7th grade student as “this thing” and “half baked maggot.” One parent repeatedly referred to the student as “he” and suggested a “good sharp knife” stop the student. Another parent said that their child should “whip his ass until he quits coming to school.”

Beene tells TIME he made the decision to close both the elementary schools, which houses kindergarten through eighth grade, and the high school on the advice of local law enforcement.

LGBTQ rights supporters were planning a demonstration at the school and police believed it would be safer to close the district — which has 400 students — because of the possibility of counter-protestors, Beene says.

The school will reopen Wednesday with police on campus..."

In general I think that's true, but it still depends. We have an interesting mix of public school kids, home schooled kids, and private school kids. If the proof is in the pudding there's been an alarming trend toward the home and private schools kids dropping out of college. Clearly the percentages are tough to adjust for, but when 14 (that we know of) Home/Private school kids result in 4 dropping from college (2 from Missouri S&T, 1 from MIZZOU, and 1 from KU), it's worth looking into. One the contrary, other than kids who simply didn't go straight to college and claimed they were going the CC route "first", I know of only one public school kid to drop out of college (KSU). And the vast majority of them are at S&T with my son, arguably the hardest school in the lot. But I'm certainly not lost on your point, I just hope my younger son can have the same success his older brother did in our public school system.

Then again, we're blessed with a very awesome local school system. At least for now.

I had to pay it and still pay property taxes. My daughter's private school wanted to accept vouchers when it looked like they were coming here. I told them what would happen. The headmaster said if any of that control stuff started, they would no longer accept them. I don't think it ever happened but that was like ten years ago.

My son is in a 10 rated school and with 2 months of left they told us he had hit all of the goals they had set for him that year. I had to say can we set some new goals there is 2 months of school left. Equal outcome for sure. Equal opportunity not so much. It drives me nuts that public schools won't give students the chance to excel at their own rate instead of holding them back. Don't even get me started with common core.

We just had that conversation with our younger son, he wants self-paced, and I'm fine with it. Back in the days the SRA material was 100% setup for kids to work at their own pace, and it worked wonderfully, so I can't argue against it in classes where it makes sense.

But yes, my son has done so much studying and many certifications online, that he love them. And there were those times when I'd be ready to pounce on him for playing on the computer at 4:30 in the morning when I leave for the gym (not that THAT hasn't slipped a bit lately!!), only to find him working on a course.

So yeah, as long as self paced doesn't mean stopped (and it certainly will for some of today's idiot kids with shitty parents!!!), I'm super-OK with it.

That being said, the online pilot training is proving to be one heck of a challenge for him. LOL..

The parent that threatened violence needs slapped upside the head.
As does the seventh grade attention-seeking boy pretending he thinks he's a girl.
As do his parents for not telling him to knock off the bullshit.

Is it chilly up there on that high moral ground?
