School shut down because of parent group threaten trans student

"A school district in southern Oklahoma was forced to shut down for two days after parents used a Facebook group to threaten violence against a transgender seventh-grade student.

Superintendent Rick Beene closed Achille Public Schools on Monday and Tuesday after parents posted claims on a Facebook group “Achille ISD Parents Group” that the student, who identifies as a girl, was looking over the stalls in the girls’ bathroom.

“Heads up parents of 5th through 7th grade,” parent Jamie Crenshaw said in a now-deleted post. “The transgender is already using the girls bathroom. We have been told how the school has gone above and beyond to make sure he has his own restroom yet he is still using the girls. REALLY… Looks like its going to be a long year.”

Beene would not confirm whether the alleged bathroom incident occurred.

The post set off reactions from other adults who referred to the 7th grade student as “this thing” and “half baked maggot.” One parent repeatedly referred to the student as “he” and suggested a “good sharp knife” stop the student. Another parent said that their child should “whip his ass until he quits coming to school.”

Beene tells TIME he made the decision to close both the elementary schools, which houses kindergarten through eighth grade, and the high school on the advice of local law enforcement.

LGBTQ rights supporters were planning a demonstration at the school and police believed it would be safer to close the district — which has 400 students — because of the possibility of counter-protestors, Beene says.

The school will reopen Wednesday with police on campus..."

Yeah, vouchers are a great idea if your goal is to destroy the public school systems by giving those tax dollars to private school instead.

For right-wingers, "public schools" actually means "my private schools supported by your tax dollars".

The difference between you and me is I am for liberty. I believe in empowering people, not government. You on the other hand think that the government is there in the best interest of the people. Everyone should have a voucher and a choice. This empowers people to make choose a system that is best for the direction of their child. The public school system sucks.

I'd prefer a school tax credit instead if one wants to attend a private schools—which also have to be watched because teachers get trained by the same universities teaching them a large amount of crap—both social and academic.

Vouchers will have govt strings attached, particularly on social issues, to private schools who accept them. They'll want the money not suspecting they will be controlled. Once they accept and get used to the easy money, they will be trapped.

If anything Vouchers will destroy the private school systems, bringing under state control and that control would likely grow.

I suppose the govt could use a less direct means of control claiming certain schools cannot be used when taking a tuition tax credit. It also wouldn't cover the whole expense at a private school either. Some of which are considerably higher than cost shelled out to govt schools, some which are lower...and some that are lower still do a good job. You still have to investigate the curriculum and methods of each private school you look at.

Most respectable private schools will not accept vouchers. They have a hard enough tiime supporting the massive growth they are experiencing. Adding more kids and letting the govt in the door with be the death of their school.

Which goes to show how bad public schools are. The tax credit sounds good.

It sucked paying local taxes for public schools while sacrificing for the future of my kids and paying for private schools. It wasn’t easy but they are more prepared and better educated than their public school counterparts.

Sorry-bad argument. I pay $860 a year for taxes to the school district that I teach in.

Three of the local private schools charge at least $17,000 for tuition. You are spending the money so you do not have to be around 'those kids'

I am legally obligated to teach the same thing those fancy private schools teach. I just have the kids that don't have the means to pay to be in a private (usually religious) school.

We used to have an honors program. My kids easily averaged 91% for their grades. A former principal killed it and mixed everyone together. My class average is now about 73%. Does that mean I am a worse teacher than I was 5 years ago? Or is it the clientele? I teach the same things, the same way.

We lose kids going to private religious schools. We can't compete with that.
Most private schools will not take the kids we get. Under nourished, can't read, addicted to video games, anti-social behavior, can't count to ten, disrespectful. And that are the Kindergartners. Not kidding.

My kid went to the same school with the kids I used to teach. She did well because she did not buy into the shit that the others tried. She did her best.
Yes, she had some bad teachers. But there are bad workers in private schools and private business.

None of this applies to this kid in the OP.

Son of a gun. My goal IS to destroy the public school system. You figured that one out.

This too is an excellent point. Private schools have very good reasons for being "private".

I don't live in the bay area, but I go there every once in a while. While I have seen many homeless people, I have never seen a syringe or pile of human shit on the street.

But my comment was actually directed to the mentality of the parents making these social media posts. They don't seem to have progressed - maturity wise - past the level of their children.
