Not to mention Wes Welker who has some of the best hands EVER dropping a pass he catches 99 out of 100

I think smith is A little high on that list based on last year alone and how rough smith started the year I would put cousins mariota and cutler ahead of him.

That was tough catch.

This paradox bothers me quite a bit: Football is a game of inches and singular plays that we all view as momentous. The paradox is that if other plays had been executed, that situation would have never occurred.

It's just interesting to ponder. You start watching film and looking at all of the times you (or others) ****ed up in big situations and most don't think to look at the smaller events that could have prevented the aforementioned situations from happening.

How does a dual threat QB with one of the best winning %'s over the last 5 years not even make tier 2?

THIS is a great example of why ESPN is losing followers

Stats not every one of those QB's in Tier 2 has a top 10 defense to fall back on.

The voting panel for our third annual NFL QB Tier Rankings consisted of 42 league insiders -- 10 general managers, five head coaches, seven offensive coordinators, five defensive coordinators, eight personnel evaluators and seven other position coaches/executives.

Tier 2:
Brees

Rivers

Tier 3:
Palmer
Eli
Flacco
Romo
Ryan
Stafford

Newton

Palmer is better than Eli and flacco, who shouldn't be in tier 2. I'm not sure i get the constant love for Dalton either. Cutler can bite me as well.

Not necessarily.

To an extent that's true but if a QB continues to win year after year in different situations and without a great D while performing solidly consistently, it's time the QB gets some respect.

Look at what happened to the 49ers after he left, they went downhill, slowly, but it did happen. Now look at them. Complete rebuild mode with the garbage college coach Chip Kelly. We have been going in the opposite direction since Alex Smith got here. A coincidence? I don't think so. The guy knows how to win games despite his limitations. He's smart, earned a economics degree in two years with a 3.74 GPA in college and was working on his masters before he got drafted.

At the end of the day football is about winning, not fantasy football. Stats do not tell the whole story. He's a good QB if you want to win games. If all you care about is stats then I guess he isn't but that's not what I am worried about.

I think this is pretty accurate as of this last season. Smith has a chance in my book to work his way up to around the 12 spot and jump a tier if he shows a little more this season. Had Cam won last year I think that puts him up there in the top tier.

The 49ers slide had a lot more to do with Harbaugh sabotaging them and legitimately everyone with a morsel of talent retiring in the same offseason.

Are you referring to Alex? If so, I think it's because he's perceived to be on one of the tighter leashes in the league. I don't think most fans can point to two games where he's had a "wow" moment.

I think he's definitely top half and that shouldn't be viewed as a slight towards him, he just hasn't done anything spectacular. The guy has averaged 18 TDs in the last 5 years, with 23 being the best and it's a 'passing league' now. Plus, he lost his gig in SF and while he's had success in KC, he's likely the 4th or 5th name people will point to for their success.

You don't go 5 seasons with a winning % like Smith's and turn around a 2-14 team just by accident. Also, discounting his running ability when grading his value at QB is just foolish. Dual threat QBs have had far more success than pro style QB's.

ESPN is garbage as seen by their ratings. They probably selected their panel from the perennial loser franchises. I bet Pioli was a voter
