There is some evidence that the simulated training from the post Vietnam era has dramatically reduced the issue - i.e. soldiers now fire their weapons. However, a problem with that is higher levels of PTSD.

I cannot prove this unequivocally. However as a combat vet who did fire and has unwanted feelings about it since, I believe this to be true.
Very interesting!

Sheriff's had responded to prior incidents/disturbances at the shooters home, and mental evaluators determined 5150 hold wasn't necessary. Sounds like they were wrong.

I haven't had a chance to read ALL of that but the article you linked appears to expose Marshall as a liar who fabricated most of what he wrote.

I'd assume it's a product of modern soldiers being mentally alert for shit like suicide bombers / IEDs / ambushes by combatants looking like civilians for too long of a duration leading to PTSD as well as pinning down what PTSD actually is more than anything.

Shit happened in the old days after wars, you just didn't hear about unless it happened "in your neck of the woods". You didn't hear about stuff happening several states away unless it was truly horrific. Nowadays if a mouse farts in northeastern middle of nowhere North Dakota you'll be reading about it on the internet in less than 10 minutes with a full description of his diet, what it smelled like and if the other mice were offended.

Its more like modern war is full of unknown danger. Before the American Civil War battles tended to be over in hours. Waterloo for instance which was a gigantic battle for the time was over in less than four hours. Most of that time for a soldier was spent marching around while being in danger and actual combat was only minutes. Not only that but you could see who was shooting at you. The danger is known and the mind can cope with that because it can decompress once the danger is clear which it would once you were out of range, or the weather turned bad, or night fell.

Once the American Civil War came about and even further in WWI, you could be killed without even knowing it or even seeing the danger and were always in danger. Battles also started lasting for much longer running into days long. That puts the mind into a state where there is no ability to decompress. This turns into combat fatigue as the mind can only operate at such a level for so long.

Of course they end. After the 9/11 tragedy you lost your rights to privacy (NSA), traveling without harassment (TSA), and of course your rights to keep your income as we debt-spent for Iraq (Bushie)
